History
The Castle Hill Farm complex was established in the early C19 as Fox's Brewery and continued as a working brewery until 1950. The surviving buildings date mainly from the second quarter C19 to the late C19, and consist of the owner's house, a brewery range with adjacent malting tower, a large granary with dray house, a stable block and a brewery office. They are ranged loosely around a courtyard
Exterior
of Brewery: A stone-built triple-pile building of 2, 1 and 1 storeys from L to R, with plain gables and slate roofs. Asymmetrical S (entrance) facade of brick with central, single-storey brick projection. Flush entrance with cambered head and 6-panelled door. 12 pane recessed sash to L with cambered head and stone cill. 2 brick chimneys with simple dentilated and moulded caps. Modern French window to ground floor L. 6-pane tripartite casement to First floor 12-pane casement to L and Modern window to R. The L, 2-storey gable with plain boarded double doors and 16-pane cross-window above. A 4-pane cross window to the central gable, and a pair of boarded double doors to the furthest gable, with 4-pane fan-light.
To the R and adjoining, a partly rebuilt cellar hoist housing with original winch mechanism and loading doors. Open, and of brick on a stone plinth. Beneath this and the adjoining brewery range are 4 large brick-vaulted cellars. The Malting Tower: Adjacent to the Brewery and formerly attached
to the E. Mid C19 and on three floors, the ground floor an open barrel-vault. First floor entrances to E, S and W faces, the former with hoist. Plane ventilation openings to second floor. Gabled roof with ventilation dormer to E. To the W, and occupying a third of the top storey, a large cast iron, rivetted water tank, partly external. Inside, the remains of a large furnace. The E face of the tower has recently been largely rebuilt.
