Location
Situated facing S towards Barrack Hill, at SE corner of Market Street.
History
1843-5 former National School by William Edye, and Master's House added circa 1847 (possibly by G Gwyther) in matching style. Since 1926 a Labour Exchange.
Exterior
Painted stucco with slate hipped roofs. Pointed windows with C20 plastic glazing, replacing small-paned windows with intersecting tracery heads, the upper half tilting. Basement and main storey to front, two-storey to rear. Main school range has W end stack and two ridge ventilators, five windows (originally 6, the second from left lost) and five flat-headed basement windows. Circa 1930 flat-roofed stucco SW porch. To E, between school and house, recessed entry bay with tall round-arched doorway in Roman Doric columned doorcase, the entablature cutting across arch head slightly, C20 door and fanlight. Master's house has similar two-window front, formerly with two side-wall stacks each side. Blocked basement windows. Main windows were small-paned sashes with intersecting tracery to fixed heads.
Reason for designation
An interesting early school building retaining much of its original character despite altered windows. William Edye was Master Shipwright at the Dockyard.
