Omschrijving
In 1834-1839 tot standgekomen kustbatterij ter bescherming van de noordelijke vaargeul van de Westerschelde. Zeszijdige redoute met twee lange facen(noord- en zuidzijde) en vier korte facen, en oorspronkelijk aan alle zijden omgeven door een brede, natte gracht. De zuidelijke lange en korte facen worden ingenomen door gemetselde kazematten, waarin 18 met tongewelf overkluisde localen met schietgaten aan de grachtzijde en waarop het batterijgeschut stond opgesteld. De overige facen worden ingenomen door aarden wallen met een walgang. In het midden van de zuidelijke lange facen de halfrondgesloten toegangspoort. Aan de zijde van de binnenplaats (dubbele) deuren met halfronde bovenlichten voorzien van roedenverdeling en diefijzers, halfrondgesloten vensters met roedenverdeling en diefijzers, en naar de beide uiteinden der kazematten een gemetselde trap. Fraai en gaaf militair bouwwerk, dat zowel in de Nederlands-Belgische oorlog als in de Tweede Wereldoorlog van tactische betekenis geweest is.

Description
Coastal battery constructed in 1834-1839 for the protection of the northern shipping channel of the Westerschelde. Six-sided redoubt with two long faces (north and south sides) and four short faces, and originally surrounded on all sides by a broad, wet ditch. The southern long and short faces are occupied by masonry casemates, containing 18 barrel-vaulted rooms with gun emplacements on the ditch side, on which the battery guns were mounted. The remaining faces are occupied by earth ramparts with a wall gallery. In the centre of the southern long face the semi-circular enclosed entrance gate. On the inner courtyard side double doors with semi-circular fanlights fitted with glazing bars and wall anchors, semi-circular enclosed windows with glazing bars and wall anchors, and at both ends of the casemates a masonry stair. Fine and well-preserved military building, which has been of tactical significance both in the Dutch-Belgian war and in the Second World War.
