Omschrijving
"Hagelkruis". Op de Hooge Akkers, ten zuidwesten van het Protestantse Kerkhof, op het kruispunt van vier landwegen, een stenen hagelkruis, het enige bewaarde in Noord-Brabant. Hagelkruisen zijn kruisen die sedert de vroege middeleeuwen in het veld op een wegenkruispunt werden opgericht om onweer en hagel af te weren. Er werden regelmatig broodbedelingen bij gehouden (vgl. de "Hagelspende" in Duitse landen), op de Kruisdagen (in april of mei) hield een processie er statie; tevens waren zij vaak ook grenssteen. Het stenen hagelkruis te Aarle is vermoedelijk XVIe-eeuws, vertoont in reliëf een archaische Christusfiguur en heeft bovenin een kleine vierkante opening, die mogelijk gediend heeft om er een kaars of lantaarn in te plaatsen.

Description
"Hail Cross". On the Hooge Akkers, to the southwest of the Protestant Churchyard, at the intersection of four country roads, a stone hail cross, the only one preserved in Noord-Brabant. Hail crosses are crosses that have been erected in the field at road intersections since the early Middle Ages to ward off storms and hail. Bread collections were regularly held at them (compare the "Hail Dole" in German lands); on the Cross Days (in April or May) a procession held a station there; they were also often boundary stones. The stone hail cross at Aarle is presumably 16th century, shows in relief an archaic Christ figure and has at the top a small square opening, which may have served to place a candle or lantern in it.
