NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

Cluster 32. Inundation culvert / sluice.

NEW HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Introduction

INUNDATION CULVERT / SLUICE in the Groenekanseweg, as a civil and military water engineering component of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. The defence system of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie was primarily based on the controlled inundation of (large) terrain surfaces. Controlled inundation required an ingenious system of water works, such as sluices, weirs, waterways and canals, by means of which the water level could be quickly set and maintained within narrow limits. The waterways and canals were often already present in situ and required at most minor adaptation. In the Groenekanseweg, in Groenekan, approximately 20 m west of the A27, there is an inundation culvert / sluice, of which both openings are still clearly visible. The sluicelet had both a civil and a military function. It formed part of the Waterschap de Biltsche en Zeister Grift. As early as the 1870s, a sluicelet was already marked on the map at this location; the current example dates from 1931. During inundations, the work, which formed part of the Groenekanseweg functioning as a dyke, was opened to enable inundation of the area north of the Groenekanseweg.

Description

INUNDATION CULVERT / SLUICE in the Groenekanseweg, consisting of a conduit approximately 10 metres in length and composed of round concrete sewer pipes with a diameter of 0.75 metres, which are situated beneath the road / dyke. The inundation culvert / sluice has a sluice gate on the north side. On both sides a straight, mortared brick abutment, topped with a coping.

Valuation

The INUNDATION CULVERT / SLUICE in the Groenekanseweg, slightly west of the A27, forming part of the complex Works between Fort Ruigenhoek and Fort de Gagel, is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as a component of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realised from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic construction, which was based on and arose as a consequence of

- the system of inundation and access defence (19th and 20th centuries) and

- the competition with strengthening offensive means (19th century),

- the system of 'living' field fortification in depth (20th century).

This concerns an expression of historical road and water engineering related to military-strategic construction, namely a culvert / sluice for civil and military applications.

* Ensemble value and situational values as a component of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie, as well as because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is representative (characteristic) because it is an example of the application of this type of work in a combined civil and military situation.

* The component is reasonably well preserved because the main form has remained intact.
