Cluster 33. Bomvrij wachthuis A.
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding

Description
Cluster 33. Bomb-proof Guard House A.
NEW HOLLAND WATERLINE
Introduction
BOMB-PROOF GUARD HOUSE A on the redoubt of Fort Blauwkapel, as a structure on three sides and on top surrounded by earth, a masonry building on the south side of the fort and dating from 1849-1852. A bomb-proof guard building is an accommodation with provisions for personnel and their equipment that is able to withstand impacts of projectiles of a predefined calibre. With the increase in the range of artillery, the force of projectile impacts and the explosive force of (brisant) grenades it became increasingly difficult to offer resistance to bombardments. Strengthening of masonry, application of shock-absorbing masonry systems (among other things by means of arches), shallow angles of inclination and curved or conversely pointed forms, use of concrete - and later of reinforced concrete - in increasingly heavy execution, was one of the ways to keep the fortifications able to withstand increasing offensive force. Moreover, the application of earth coverings proved to be a good means to absorb or dampen the energy. This is the reason why many masonry or concrete structures are provided with a layer of earth or a frontal protection of sand or earth. Depending on the period of construction - and thereby on the expected impact force of projectiles - one spoke of 'bomb-proof buildings', when they were deemed able to withstand a predefined number of impacts of heavy calibre. The bomb-proof guard building A of Fort Blauwkapel lies directly opposite the bridge / access to the redoubt at the gorge side of the fort and is - after major restoration in the years 2007-2009 - in fairly good condition. The structure is - unlike most others on the fort - not freely accessible, as it is in use by scouts and is therefore not publicly accessible.
Description
Brickwork, BOMB-PROOF GUARD HOUSE A (1849-1852), on the redoubt, erected in fair-faced masonry and in 1870-1871 on three sides and on top provided with a protective earth covering. In the front facade a recessed, arched entrance and on either side various facade openings, as well as arched loopholes at various heights. In the interior among other things three vaulted spaces, a water cellar and a stairwell.
Brick guard house built on the partially moated redoubt in the years 1849-1852 and in 1870-71 provided on three sides with a protective earth covering. The rectangular building with rounded corners is erected in fair-faced masonry. In the middle of the front facade is a recessed entrance, on either side angled (tapered) loopholes. These loopholes are situated on all sides of the otherwise closed facade surfaces. The interior comprises three vaulted spaces and various other spaces, including a water cellar and a stairwell leading to the roof, where a higher erected parapet is intended for sheltered placement of artillery and / or for protection of personnel.
Valuation
The BOMB-PROOF GUARD HOUSE A of Fort Blauwkapel is of general interest because of:
* Cultural historical values as part of the New Holland Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 realized by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently by others for approximately 125 years strengthened and improved.
* Architectural historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century), b. the competition with increasingly strengthening offensive means (19th century).
This concerns a component from around 1850, partly modified around 1870 - as an example of an earth-covered, brick, bomb-proof structure.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Holland Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.
* The component is representative (characteristic) because it in appearance shows the characteristics that emphasize the defensive purpose of that time.
* The component is fairly well preserved because the structure after restoration is in virtually the condition in which it was around 1870 and because it still retains various authentic components and details.
