NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

Cluster 30. Sluice / small sluice.

NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE

Introduction

SLUICE / SMALL SLUICE as a civil and military hydraulic engineering component of the New Hollandic Waterline. The defence system of the New Hollandic Waterline was primarily based on the controlled flooding of (large) terrain surfaces. Controlled inundation required an ingenious system of waterworks, such as sluices, weirs, drainage channels and canals, by means of which the water level could be rapidly set and maintained within narrow limits. The drainage channels and canals were often already present at the location and required at most some adjustment. At Fort De Gagel, various waterworks were constructed which served to precisely regulate the desired levels of inundation fields and the fort moat. These included dam-sluices constructed in different phases and a sluice. The sluice is located to the south-east of the fort in the drainage channel along Gageldijk, just outside the fort moat, and already appears on the 1873 map - and as a 'sluice' also on the map from around 1850. The small sluice had both a civil and a military function, as it formed part of the boundary between two polders (Polder Binnenweg and Polder Gagel) and - as part of the inundation basin embankment Kerkeindsche Dijk - also between two inundation basins of the New Hollandic Waterline. The sluice was damaged in 1939/1940 during the construction of fortifications at the fort. The sluice / small sluice has in relatively recent times been (newly?) restored / reconstructed using largely new materials, but shows strong similarities with a comparable, authentic example on the Voordorpsedijk near Fort Blauwkapel. This sluice is distinguished especially from the small sluice at Fort De Gagel by the presence of a wooden canopy above the winch mechanism. Authentic examples of this type of sluice / small sluice are rare.

Description

SLUICE / SMALL SLUICE for regulating the water level and installed on the transition from the fort moat to the drainage channel along Gageldijk. The mechanism, executed almost entirely in iron, has concrete walls or retaining walls on both sides and a wooden gate as water barrier. The gate can be operated via a winch and a manually operated wheel with spokes. Above the winch a metal canopy.

Valuation

The SLUICE / SMALL SLUICE at Fort De Gagel is of general significance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially constructed from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus, and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic architecture, which was based on and emerged as a consequence of - the system of inundation and access defence (19th century) and - the race with increasingly powerful offensive means (19th century).

This is a component that originally probably dates from around the middle of the 19th century, namely an expression of historical hydraulic engineering related to military-strategic architecture.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline, and because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is representative (characteristic) because it is a good example of the application of this type of gate in a combined civil and military situation and in typological terms there is a question of rarity.
