Inleiding

Waardering

I Cultuurhistorische waarde: belang van het complex

1. als bijzondere uitdrukking van een cultuurhistorische ontwikkeling. Na de oorlog ontstonden er meerdere proefboerderijen die gericht waren op de verbetering en verhoging van productie. De landbouw- en veeteelt verwetenschappelijkte als het ware. Deze proefboerderij maakte deel uit van de Landbouwhogeschool en had zowel een wetenschappelijk als een onderwijskundige grondslag;

2. wegens bijzondere herinneringswaarde.

Alle bebouwing is functioneel.

Introduction

A EXPERIMENTAL FARM built in 1954 with a FRONT HOUSE and two adjoining BARNS, a detached BARN and MANURE YARD with a LIQUID MANURE CELLAR for the then Department of Animal Physiology of the Agricultural University (now university) Wageningen. The farm was designed by architects P.H.N. Briët, J. Bleeker and A. Wijtzes on commission from the State Building Service on behalf of the Department of Animal Physiology, built to enable experiments with animals in order to improve the production of milk and meat. This was achieved among other things by optimising the welfare of the animals (for example well-heated stalls and balanced feed). In doing so, a practical farm type was chosen, whereby the experiments could be carried out as effectively as possible. In addition, the experimental farm was an educational building, where students of the agricultural university received instruction. The whole can be considered an educational building in 'farm clothing'.

It is located in the Kortenoord area on the west side of Wageningen, in the transition area from built-up surroundings to rural countryside. Currently the relationship with the rural surroundings is still undisturbed, but there are plans to realise a residential district directly next to the complex.

After the war the number of students at the State Agricultural University in Wageningen increased significantly. As a result of this, among other things, several new educational buildings were constructed, such as the nationally protected Laboratory for Land Surveying (1954). That there was increasingly more importance placed on qualitatively well-designed buildings is evident from the fact that the State Building Service also engaged external architects. These buildings were primarily intended to be functional and were predominantly designed in traditional and simple fashion. This also applies to the experimental farm for Animal Physiology.

The experimental farm came into being in conjunction with the experimental facility for Agricultural Crop Cultivation designed by J. Wiedijk in 1953. The departments of animal physiology and agricultural crop cultivation had a close relationship with each other, because the livestock in the experimental farm provided the necessary manure for the experimental plots and the crops in these fields provided the most optimal feed for the livestock.

In the large barn directly behind the front house there was room for the cattle and in the smaller barn next to it were the young stock and the storage space where the harvest was stored. In the detached barn at the back of the farmyard the machinery was parked and the pigs were housed.

The exterior of the complex is still in very good condition. Some changes have taken place in the interior of the experimental farm, but the original layout with residential section and stalling complex remains intact. From the furnishings it is still possible to see how experiments were carried out (for example heating elements in the ceiling).

The experimental farm is one of many experimental farms from the postwar reconstruction period and can be considered a good representative. The experimental farm on the Haarweg is one of the few examples that has remained largely undisturbed. Most experimental farms have been adapted over time and/or have acquired a different function.

The experimental farm is no longer in use as such.

Description

All buildings on the complex are executed in a traditionalist, Delft School style, whereby the front house and the adjoining stalls behind are executed as an articulated Frisian head-neck-body farmhouse with an H-shaped floor plan. The different building sections are connected to each other by means of linking elements. The buildings on the farmyard display great coherence through unity in building style, colour and material use.

On the north side of the farmyard lies the detached barn with the manure yard with liquid manure cellar next to it, located to the east.

Exterior:

Both the farm and the detached barn behind it are built with brick facades, furnished with roofs with red Improved Dutch tiles and a thatched insulation layer, concrete (ventilation) windows and wooden (part) doors. In the east roof plane of the large barn is a hoist opening with a small gabled roof above it. The detached barn is provided with a loft hatch on the right side gable.

The front house is also provided with two tall chimneys above the gable ends and a simple roof dormer at the front. The windows and doors are of wood.

The manure yard with liquid manure cellar is mainly executed in concrete.

Interior:

The interior of the front house is sober and simply executed. The dwelling is symmetrically divided by a central corridor with, among other things, the living room and a kitchen on either side. A fixed staircase leads to the first floor where a hall and three rooms are realised. Noteworthy in the dwelling is the use of concrete enamel as wall boarding in the corridor. Concrete enamel has been used from approximately 1939 to 1965 as a cheaper alternative to wall tiles.

The layout of the stalls behind the front house and the detached barn remains largely unchanged. Among other things the former bulls' and horses' stall, shower room, a weighing bridge, feed silos and in the threshing floor the feeding rack are still present. Original drinking troughs and heating elements can also be found.

The roof structure of the stall behind the front house is provided with a roof truss structure with wooden trussed rafters. This made it possible to create one large open undivided space in the attic.

Valuation

I Cultural historical value: significance of the complex

1. as a distinctive expression of a cultural historical development. After the war several experimental farms were created that aimed at improvement and increase of production. Agriculture and livestock farming became scientifically oriented as it were. This experimental farm was part of the Agricultural University and had both a scientific and an educational basis;

2. because of its special commemorative value. It recalls the emergence of experimental farms related to the Agricultural University after the war.

II Architectural and art historical value: (distinctive) significance of the object/complex

1. because of the aesthetic qualities of the design. Although the complex is sober and functional in nature, the design nonetheless possesses aesthetic qualities. The buildings on the farmyard display great coherence through unity in building style, colour and material use.

2. because of the distinctive coherence between exterior and interior. All buildings are functional. From the outside it is possible to see what the function of the interior space is.

III Situational and ensemble value

1. significance of the object as an essential (cultural historical, functional and/or architectural historical and visual) component of a complex. All buildings on the farmyard display great coherence through unity in building style, colour and material use. In addition, there is functional and spatial coherence.

2. distinctive significance of the complex because of the high-quality nature of the buildings in relation to the mutual historical-spatial context and in relation to the nearby experimental farm for Agricultural Crop Cultivation.

IV Integrity and recognisability: significance of the object/complex

1. because of the architectural integrity and recognisability of exterior and/or interior;

2. because of the material, technical and constructional integrity;

3. as still clearly recognisable expression of the original function;

4. because of the integrity and recognisability of the entire ensemble of constituent components.

V Rarity

1. significance of the object/complex because of its rarity as one of the few undisturbed farms with an educational function.
