Inleiding:
De twee verdedigingswerken ten noorden van het huidige Werk aan de Daatselaar behoorden tot de versterkingen die in 1786 werden aangelegd om de toegang tot de Slaperdijk, de Groeperkade en de damsluis in de Lunterse Beek te beschermen. Omdat ze niet aansloten op de liniedijk nam in 1799 nam het huidige werk hun verdedigende taak over. Ze werden toen grotendeels geslecht, maar ze zijn nog altijd zichtbaar in het landschap ten noordoosten van de sluis.
Omschrijving:
In 1786 aangelegd aarden VERDEDIGINGSWERK, bestaande uit twee gesloten werken in de vorm van een lunet en een redoute. Het maximale oppervlak van de redoute is 100 meter bij 90 meter. De lunet heeft een maximaal oppervlak van 120 bij 65 meter. Rond de versterkingen is geen gracht (meer) aanwezig.
Waardering:
De aanleg is van algemeen belang vanwege:
Cultuurhistorische waarden als onderdeel van de Grebbelinie, zoals deze in een periode van 200 jaar in zes fasen is aangelegd.
Architectuurhistorische waarden in het bijzonder als uiting van de militair-strategische bouwkunde, die gebaseerd is op:
a. het systeem van inundatie en accesverdediging (18de, 19de en 20ste eeuw), b. het systeem van 'levende' veldversterking in de diepte (20ste eeuw) c. de voorpostfunctie tijdens de mobilisatie en oorlogshandelingen 1939 - 1940
Het betreft hier een complex dat in eerste aanleg een voorbeeld is van verdedigingswerken uit de periode:
fase 2: 1785 -'86, versterking
Ensemblewaarde vanwege zijn ligging binnen het systeem van de Grebbelinie in het algemeen, in het bijzonder als onderdeel van de nog gaaf bewaarde liniedijk tussen het Werk aan de Roode Haan en de kern van de gemeente Leusden. Tevens vanwege de functionele en fysieke samenhang van de onderdelen van het complex. Tenslotte is hier sprake van een gave/redelijk gave relatie met het schootsveld en inundatieveld
