The register's description

Inleiding:

fase 4: 1799, versterking Franse Tijd

Introduction:

The Work at the Daatselaar was intended to lock and defend access to the Groeperkade and the Slaperdijk, both ridge dikes in the Grebbelinie, and served as protection for the dam lock in the Lunterse beek which lies immediately in front of the work. Initially in 1786 a lunette and a redoubt were built at a point northwest of the point where the Slaperdijk and Groeperkade converged. In 1799 the present work took over their defensive role. Because the work was considered too advanced a position with respect to the Valleistelling, no further fortifications were made here in 1939-1940. In 2008 the work was brought back into profile.

Description:

Earth FORTIFICATION built in 1799, consisting of a closed earth fortification with a bastioned form on the west side and a tenaillé form on the east side, surrounded by a wet ditch. The work is a well-preserved example of a fortification that is partly bastioned and partly tenaillé. On the front side the shooting slits for cannons in the breastwork are still visible. On the terreplein the ramps in the corners are still recognisable, intended for positioning cannons. The surface of the work is 320 metres in length and 120 metres in width. On the work there are five boundary markers with the inscriptions O6, O7, O13, O16 and O109 (the last two on one boundary marker) and O123. In addition there is one boundary post with the designation O.

Valuation:

The construction is of general interest because of:

Cultural historical values as part of the Grebbelinie, as it was built in six phases over a period of 200 years.

Architectural historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic building science, which is based on:

a. the system of inundation and access defence (18th, 19th and 20th century), b. the system of 'living' field fortification in depth (20th century) c. the outpost function during mobilisation and military operations 1939-1940

This concerns a complex which is initially an example of fortifications from the period:

phase 4: 1799, fortification French Period

Ensemble value because of its location within the system of the Grebbelinie in general, in particular as part of the well-preserved line dike between the Work at the Roode Haan and the centre of the municipality of Leusden. Also because of the functional and physical coherence of the components of the complex. Finally, there is a good/reasonably good relationship with the field of fire and inundation field.

The complex is rare because it is still an almost complete existing example of an 18th century fortification in the Grebbelinie and as such is representative (characteristic) of this type of fortification.

The complex is well preserved because almost all its component parts are still present in more or less recognisable form and function.
