NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

NEW HOLLANDIC WATER LINE

Introduction

REMAINING INUNDATION SLUICE / DAM SLUICE / CULVERT (northeast) at the Fort at Vuren, as a combined military hydraulic engineering component of the inundation means for the polder area around Vuren. The defence system of the New Hollandic Water Line was primarily based on the controlled flooding of (large) terrain surfaces. Controlled inundation required an ingenious system of water works, such as sluices, weirs and canals, by means of which the necessary water level could be quickly set and maintained within narrow limits. Many different types of sluices were used, depending on the place where they functioned in the system. Sometimes already existing shipping, drainage or check sluices were used, but many new ones were also built or existing ones (substantially) adapted. Both occurred at the Fort at Vuren. This concerns a culvert sluice on the northeast side of the ditch around the fort which was built as a dam sluice to maintain the water level in the ditch and as an inundation sluice for the polders to the north and east of the fort. The sluice was presumably constructed after the construction of the slightly more southerly located pumping station.

Description

REMAINING INUNDATION SLUICE / DAM SLUICE / CULVERT (northeast) consisting of two presumed fronts dating from around 1880, on either side of the maintenance path on the outside of the ditch of the Fort at Vuren. They are connected beneath the path by a closable pipe, which served as a barrier for the water in the ditch - also after possible inundation of the polder area outside the ditch.

Valuation

The REMAINING INUNDATION SLUICE / DAM SLUICE / CULVERT (northeast) at the Fort at Vuren is of general importance by virtue of:

* Cultural-historical values as a component of the New Hollandic Water Line as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realised from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus and thereafter strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building techniques, which are based on the system of inundation and access defence (19th century).

This concerns an expression of historical hydraulic engineering related to military-strategic building techniques, namely a water work which in combination with several nearby, related works could contribute to the inundation of polder areas and the maintenance of the water level in the ditch of the Fort at Vuren.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Water Line. Also by virtue of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is reasonably well preserved because the main form, constructional detailing and various components have remained recognisable.
