NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE

Introduction

REMAINT INUNDATION SLUICE / DAM SLUICE / CULVERT (east) as a combined military and civil hydraulic engineering component of the inundation facilities for the polder area around Vuren. The defence system of the New Hollandic Waterline was primarily based on the controlled flooding of (large) areas of terrain. Controlled inundation required an ingenious system of water works, such as sluices, weirs and canals, by which the necessary water level could be rapidly set and maintained within narrow limits. Many different types of sluices were employed, depending on the location where they functioned in the system. Sometimes existing shipping, drainage or check sluices were used, but many new ones were also built or existing ones (substantially) adapted. At the Fort at Vuren both occurred. This concerns a culvert / dam sluice / inundation sluice to the east of the fort, which not only served as the closure of a drainage system that had been diverted by the construction of the fort, but also served to maintain the water level in the fort moat. The culvert / dam sluice lay parallel with the drainage via a steam pumping station that no longer exists and is located somewhat to the north of the sharp bend in the Waaldijk to the east of the fort.

Description

REMAINT INUNDATION SLUICE / DAM SLUICE / CULVERT (east) consisting of a culvert-shaped opening under the former access to the vanished pumping station to the north of the Waaldijk, which is still clearly visible especially on the fort side, constructed of masonry. The work comprises a check wall which bends westwards on the north side to a head upon which part of the steam pumping station rested. On top, a windlass by which a sluice gate for closing the culvert could be operated.

Valuation

The REMNANT INUNDATION SLUICE / DAM SLUICE / CULVERT (east) at the Fort at Vuren is of general importance by reason of:

* Cultural-historical values as a component of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realized from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently by others for approximately 125 years strengthened and improved.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of building related to military-strategic engineering, which is based on the system of inundation and access defence (19th century).

This concerns an expression of historical hydraulic engineering related to military-strategic building, namely a water work which in combination with several nearby, related works could contribute to the inundation of polder areas and the maintenance of the water level in the moat of the Fort at Vuren.

* Ensemble value and situational values as a component of the New Hollandic Waterline. Also by reason of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is reasonably well preserved because the principal form, constructional detailing and various components have remained recognizable.
