NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

NEW HOLLAND WATERLINE

Introduction

REMAINDER INTAKE SLUICE / CHECK SLUICE / HERWIJNENSE OUTFLOW SLUICE / CULVERT (west), as a combined military and civil hydraulic engineering component of the inundation means for the polder area around Vuren. The defence system of the New Holland Waterline was based primarily on the controlled flooding of (large) areas of terrain. Controlled inundation required an ingenious system of waterworks, such as sluices, weirs and canals, by which the necessary water level could be set and maintained rapidly and within narrow limits. Many different types of sluices were employed, depending on the location where they functioned in the system. Sometimes already existing shipping, outflow or check sluices were used, but many new ones were also built or existing ones (substantially) adapted. Both occurred at the Fort at Vuren. This concerns a sluice - somewhat to the west of the moat around the fort - which from time immemorial served as an outflow sluice for the Herwijnense Polders. With the construction and later modification of the fort, the relative position of the sluice also changed. The direct connection with the adjacent polders was broken by the fort, with the result that the water which was formerly pumped via a windmill to the sluice and from there to the Waal had to take a detour around the fort. This may also have led to the construction of the steam pumping station. Furthermore, the sluice then acquired a secondary function as an intake from the Waal for the moat of the Fort at Vuren and for the supply of inundation canals for the polders to the north and east of the fort.

Description

REMAINDER INTAKE SLUICE / CHECK SLUICE / HERWIJNENSE OUTFLOW SLUICE / CULVERT (west), consisting of a vaulted, culvert-shaped conduit beneath the Waal dyke, composed of masonry and on the south or Waal side terminating in a bed-shaped outflow towards the river. The north side of the sluice not (clearly) observable, but will be comparable. The sluice is characterised by two pieces of windwork machinery present on the south side of the Waal dyke on raised masonry, by which water-retaining sluice gates could be operated.

Valuation

The REMAINDER INTAKE SLUICE / CHECK SLUICE / HERWIJNENSE OUTFLOW SLUICE / CULVERT (west) is of general interest because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially constructed from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of building related to military-strategic engineering, which was based on the system of inundation and access defence (19th century).

This concerns an expression of historical hydraulic engineering related to military-strategic building, namely a sluice of civil origin which through its location and function acquired a special role as a military sluice.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Holland Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex and because of its special position in relation to and as a result of the construction of the fort.

* The component has been reasonably well preserved because the main form, architectural detailing and various components have remained recognisable.
