NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE

Introduction

GATE LOCK (sluice), as part of the waterworks along and near the New Zuiderlinge Dike, which were to serve as inlet and barrier in the event of inundation of the adjacent western Tielerwaard. The sluice lies south of the Zuider Linge Dike, which connects to the New Zuiderlinge Dike. The defence system of the New Hollandic Waterline was primarily based on the controlled inundation of (large) land areas. Controlled inundation required an ingenious system of waterworks, such as sluices, weirs and canals, by which the necessary water level could be set and maintained quickly and within narrow limits. Many different types of sluices were employed, depending on the location where they functioned in the system. Sometimes already existing navigation, drainage or gate sluices were used, but many new ones were also built or existing ones (substantially) adapted. Sometimes local water level differences between individual polder units had to be bridged by the incorporation or use of gate sluices in existing embankments or dikes. For this purpose gate-beam closures in waterways or even in cuts in embankments were often applied, but also so-called outlets with wooden or iron lift gates or ducts with sluice gates were used for this purpose. The sluice or gate lock lies south of the Zuider Linge Dike, behind Spijkse Kweldijk house number 5, and it belongs to the simple waterworks that formed part of the New Hollandic Waterline.

Description

GATE LOCK (sluice)

Water barrier in the supply canal of the pump house of the Heukelemse Polder at Spijkse Kweldijk no. 1, dating from approximately 1930 but since closed. The sluice itself lies south of house number 5. The water barrier is approximately 5 m long, 1 m wide and rises to approximately 2 m above water level. The sluice consists of a masonry mass projecting approximately one and a half metres above ground level, with above it a pair of sheet-iron winding mechanisms with bail handles, by which the sluice gates (south side) were operated. On either side there are slightly projecting masonry structures which merge into barrier walls. The masonry is visibly supported on the north side by a metal section beam, situated at approximately ground level. The sluice, possibly dating from around 1900, is of a type that is rare within the New Hollandic Waterline.

Valuation

The GATE LOCK (sluice) near the (New) Zuider Linge Dike, behind Spijkse Kweldijk house number 5 is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus, and subsequently by others over approximately 125 years strengthened and improved.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of water engineering related to military-strategic and civil engineering, which is based on the system of inundation and access defence (19th century).

This concerns an expression of historical water engineering related to military-strategic and civil engineering, namely a sluice or gate lock from 1880.

* Ensemble values and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is representative because it is an example of a barrier lock built as part of inundation works and it has typological rarity value.

* The component is reasonably well preserved because the main form, architectural detailing and various components remain recognisable.
