NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE

Introduction

BOMBPROOF BUILDING / REMISE, building F, as a representative of a type of bombproof buildings that is provided with earth covering on three sides and on top and that possesses only a facade on the gorge side. With the increase in the range of artillery, the force of projectile impacts and the explosive power of (brisant) grenades it became increasingly difficult to withstand bombardment. Thickening of masonry, application of shock-absorbing masonry systems (among other means by means of arches), shallow slope angles and curved or conversely pointed forms, use of concrete - and later of reinforced concrete - in increasingly heavy execution, was one of the ways to keep the fortifications resistant to increasing attack force. Moreover, the application of earth coverings proved to be a good means to absorb or dampen the energy. This is the reason why many masonry or concrete works are provided with a layer of earth or a front protection of sand or earth. Depending on the period of creation - and thus of the expected impact force of projectiles - one spoke of 'bombproof buildings' when they were considered to be resistant to a predetermined number of impacts from heavy calibre. The bombproof building / remise F of the Fort at the Nieuwe Steeg is located on the northern bastion of the work and dates from the years 1886-1887. It lies behind (to the east of) building D.

Description

BOMBPROOF BUILDING / REMISE, building F is a single-storey, sunken, bombproof building, executed in (non-reinforced) concrete, that is covered on three sides and on top by earth embankments. Only the south-western facade is visible; this terminates in a pair of wing walls. The facade contains a central entrance with double sliding door, and on the left an access opening with a narrow, single sliding door. Together with bombproof building G this is the only building from the 19th-century building period executed in concrete on this fort. The interior contains a single space as a remise for cannons, with at the back a niche that was designated as a magazine.

Valuation

BOMBPROOF BUILDING / REMISE, building F, of the Fort at the Nieuwe Steeg is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-engineer Willem Offerhaus, and subsequently by others over approximately 125 years was strengthened and improved.

* Architectural-historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic building practice, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century), b. the race with increasingly strengthening offensive means (19th century).

This concerns a building from the period 1875-1885, namely a bombproof building that was used as a remise.

* Ensemble value and situational values because of the functional and physical coherence between the components of the complex.

* The building is representative (characteristic) because it still displays the physical characteristics that led to its construction at that time.

* The building is well-preserved because in terms of structure and physical appearance several main features of the condition in the 1880s of the 19th century have been preserved.
