Cluster 57. Fortwachterswoning.

NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE Inleiding

Omschrijving

Cluster 57. Fort Keeper's Dwelling.

NEW HOLLANDIC WATER LINE

Introduction

FORT KEEPER'S DWELLING of the Work at the Waalse Wetering as an official residence situated outside the wet moat, but within the Military Crown Land. Because most forts and other defence works (located outside built-up areas) - when there was no mobilisation or exercises - had no garrison of military personnel, in many cases there was a separate dwelling or other accommodation for a manager or keeper. Sometimes such a dwelling or accommodation also served another function, such as that of sluice or bridge keeper's house. In the architecture employed, there is consequently no uniformity; the building material used varies, but is usually brick or wood, and the number of storeys also differs. Usually, however, it is a single storey under a gabled roof. As for the location of a keeper's dwelling, no clear standards are evident either; some are located within the fort moat, others outside - sometimes even at some distance from the fort. In the case of the Work at the Waalse Wetering, the fort keeper's dwelling is situated on the public road, at the entrance to the fort grounds. Three 'Velux' windows have been inserted in the southern roof plane. On the north side of the originally rectangular building, an extension of approximately equal height was added (possibly in the first half of the twentieth century), creating a T-shaped floor plan; this contains a masonry chimney. The extension has rectangular windows.

Description

FORT KEEPER'S DWELLING from the last quarter of the 19th century, situated to the west of the fort, outside the wet moat, but within the Military Crown Land. The main facade or southern long facade and the original roof ridge run parallel to the Waalseweg. The house is constructed in brick on an originally rectangular floor plan under a gabled roof and is covered by grooved cross or bullet pantiles. The symmetrical facade on the street side, with the entrance centrally located and light arched window openings to left and right, is whitewashed. The sash windows are provided with glazing bars (six-pane) and have shutters. The side facades (gabled end walls with wind braces) unplastered; the eastern one is provided on the ground floor with two comparable windows and in the gable top with an arched double window under a herringbone arch motif. The western gable end wall contains an entrance opening and a window in the top.

Valuation

The FORT KEEPER'S DWELLING of the Work at the Waalse Wetering is of general importance by virtue of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Water Line as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially constructed from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus, and subsequently reinforced and improved by others over approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic building practice, which is based on the system of inundation and access defence (19th century).

The component is an example of an official residence belonging to the fort.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Water Line. Also by virtue of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is characteristic because it is a recognisable example of dwellings with such a function from this period in terms of building mass, material use and detailing.

* The component has been preserved in its main outlines fairly substantially because the original main form and various details have been retained.
