Cluster 58. Vaste IJzeren Brug.

NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

Cluster 58. Fixed Iron Bridge.

NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE

Introduction

FIXED IRON BRIDGE as part of civil and/or military traffic infrastructure works belonging to the Inundation Canal between Fort Honswijk and the Schalkwijksche Wetering. The raising or removal/destruction of bridges has since ancient times been a proven means of warding off intruders. Not only did this obstruct or delay passage or crossing over a watercourse, a dry or wet ditch or a terrain depression, but an attacker also had to provide their own means to potentially take the barrier themselves. Wooden bridges were relatively quick to destroy, if necessary by setting them on fire. Stone and concrete bridges required a larger and more time-consuming intervention, although an explosive charge could sometimes quickly achieve the desired effect. With the advent of iron bridges—applied on a large scale in the course of the 19th century in many different variants—the second possibility remained, but the first disappeared. Blowing up bridges was capital destruction and happened only in the utmost necessity. One way in which iron bridges could be closed off was by removing or making inaccessible (small) parts of them. With fixed iron bridges this possibility did not exist. The fixed iron bridge over the Inundation Canal from the Fort at Honswijk to the Schalkwijksche Wetering lies as a link in a non-inundatable east-west running strip of land, which was of strategic importance to the Field Army as a retreat route from the Grebbelinie.

Description

FIXED IRON BRIDGE in the northern section of the Inundation Canal between the Fort at Honswijk and the Schalkwijksche Wetering, originally dating from 1874. The approximately 25 m long and 3.50 m wide bridge has been restored on the basis of as much authentic material as possible and rests on four renewed wooden yokes, which project on both sides. The likewise wooden bridge deck rests on closed iron girders. On both sides of the bridge deck are fixed, approximately 1 m high, wrought-iron railings, which by means of crosswise connected uprights are divided into 21 equal bays. The two concrete abutments are not original. Bridges of this type and also of this scale are rather rare in the New Hollandic Waterline.

Valuation

The FIXED IRON BRIDGE over the northern part of the Inundation Canal between the Fort at Honswijk and the Schalkwijksche Wetering is of general importance by virtue of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realised from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently by others for approximately 125 years strengthened and improved.

* Architectural-historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic construction, which is based on and arose as a consequence of: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century), b. the race with increasingly strengthening offensive means (19th century).

This concerns a component from 1874, namely an expression related to military-strategic construction of historical water engineering, namely a fixed bridge for military purposes.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline. Also by virtue of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

- The component is representative (characteristic) because it is a good example of the application of this type of bridge in a military situation and it represents rarity value by virtue of scale, function and condition (after restoration).

- The component is well preserved because essential components have been maintained in situ and reused in restoration.
