NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

NEW HOLLANDIC WATER LINE

Introduction

REST DAMSLUIS D to the east of the Fort at Jutphaas as one of the closures of the fort moat. The defence system of the New Hollandic Water Line was primarily based on the controlled flooding of (large) land areas. Controlled inundation required an ingenious system of water works, such as sluices, weirs and canals, by means of which the necessary water level could be set and maintained quickly and within narrow limits. Many different types of sluices were applied, depending on the location where they functioned in the system. Sometimes already existing navigation, drainage or check sluices were used, but many new ones were also built or existing ones were (substantially) adapted. Sometimes local level differences between individual polder units had to be maintained by inserting or using check sluices in existing embankments or dykes. For this purpose, schotbalk closures in ditches or even in cuts in embankments were often applied, but also so-called sluices with wooden or iron lifting gates or culverts with sluice gates were used for this purpose. In the case of the damsluis to the east of the Fort at Jutphaas, a damsluis specially built for this purpose was incorporated in the outer bank of the fort, which formed a barrier between the fort moat and the diverted Overeindse Wetering.

Description

REST DAMSLUIS D, located on the east side of the Fort at Jutphaas and consisting of two masonry abutments, provided with functional natural stone components and provided with schotbalk mortices. The sluice dating from 1819 formed a separation between the (diverted) Overeindse Wetering and the moat around the fort, by means of which the water level could be set and maintained.

Valuation

REST DAMSLUIS D, on the east side of the Fort at Jutphaas is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Water Line as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 realised by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and thereafter by others strengthened and improved for approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of construction and water works related to military-strategic engineering, which were based on the system of inundation and access defence (19th century).

This concerns an expression of historical water engineering related to military-strategic engineering, namely the remains of a damsluis with schotbalk closure.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Water Line. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is representative (characteristic) because it, in conjunction with one or more nearby sluices, whether or not still present, can demonstrate the principle of the operation of setting and maintaining a moat water level.

* The component is reasonably well preserved because the main form and architectural detailing are fairly recognisable.
