Omschrijving
Cluster 50. Bomvrije Remise B.
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding
Waardering

Description
Cluster 50. Bombproof Magazine B.
NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE
Introduction
BOMBPROOF MAGAZINE B (1871-1873) as a component added in the third construction phase to the Fort at Jutphaas, previously raised as an earthwork. With the increase in the range of artillery, the force of projectile impacts made it increasingly difficult to withstand bombardments. Reinforcement of masonry, application of shock-absorbing masonry systems (among other means through arches), shallow angles of inclination and curved or pointed forms, use of concrete - and later reinforced concrete - in progressively heavier execution, were ways to keep the fortifications capable of resisting increasing attack force. Moreover, the application of earth coverings had proven to be a good means of absorbing or dampening the energy of impacts. This is the reason why many masonry or concrete works were provided with an earth layer or front protection of sand or earth. Depending on the period of construction - and thus on the expected impact force of projectiles - 'bombproof buildings' were spoken of when they were deemed capable of withstanding a predetermined number of impacts from heavy calibre. The magazine, building B, belongs to the brick bombproof storage places built in the third quarter of the 19th century on various forts in or behind the wall. The building, situated in the wall of the northernmost bastion, has a comparable counterpart on the southern part of the fort.
Description
BOMBPROOF MAGAZINE B, located on the east flank of the earthwork of the northernmost bastion. The magazine, covered with earth on three sides and on top, has a masonry west facade with chamfered corners, which are provided with wattling. The arched entrance section has a double wooden door. The magazine contains one chamber for the positioning of artillery.
Valuation
BOMBPROOF MAGAZINE B is of general interest by reason of:
* Cultural-historical values as a component of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially constructed from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently reinforced and improved by others for approximately 125 years.
* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th century), b. the competition with increasingly strengthened offensive means (19th century)
This concerns a component that is an example of a brick building from the third quarter of the 19th century, namely an earth-covered, bombproof storage place.
* Ensemble value and situational values by reason of its location within the system of the New Hollandic Waterline in general and in particular in the direct relationship to other components of the complex and the counterpart on the southern part of the fort.
* The component is representative (characteristic) because it is clearly recognizable as a bombproof storage place.
* The component is well preserved because it still exhibits the physical and functional features that originally motivated its construction.
