Duiker bij Nigtevecht.
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding

Description
Cluster 6.
Culvert at Nigtevecht.
NEW HOLLAND WATER LINE
Introduction
INUNDATION CULVERT at Nigtevecht as an essential component of the inundation system of the New Holland Water Line. In the Kanaaldijk-Oost, slightly southwest of the locks at Nigtevecht, lies a large bomb-proof culvert that was designed to withstand air raids. This was put out to tender in 1939 for the benefit of Fortress Holland. In the event of bombardment of the nearby navigation locks, the culvert would assume the inundation function: the locks would then be blocked with sandbags. The culvert is separated from the Vecht side by a short discharge basin and a bank of the river Vecht; on the bank lies the Vreelandseweg. Diagonally opposite the culvert, on the west side of the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal, lies Fort Nigtevecht. The fort was part of the Amsterdam Defence Line and had the task of blocking and defending the accesses formed by the Merwedekanaal and the Vecht, as well as protecting the locks between these waters and the Vecht water pipeline. The defence system of the New Holland Water Line was primarily based on the controlled inundation of (large) areas of land. By means of an ingenious system of locks, culverts, dams, weirs, dike openings, and so forth, the necessary water level could be quickly established and maintained within narrow limits. Partly this made use of existing civil water management structures. Sometimes the works were (significantly) adapted to meet military requirements. However, part of the works were built specifically for the New Holland Water Line, including this culvert at Nigtevecht. Via culverts, the inundation fields separated by roads and banks were nevertheless connected in (controlled) communication with one another. The culvert at Nigtevecht is of particularly large dimensions and contains seven tubes. After the Merwedekanaal was widened into the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal, the Hoekerpolder between the Vecht and the canal could be inundated via the inundation culvert and a no longer existing culvert in the present Korte Velterslaan. On the Vecht side, a wooden bicycle bridge has been built next to the culvert, which is not part of the culvert structure; the culvert itself carries the road along the canal at this location.
Description
Concrete INUNDATION CULVERT, put out to tender in 1939 and probably completed in 1940, in the Kanaaldijk-Oost of the Merwedekanaal / Amsterdam-Rhine Canal at the village of Nigtevecht, just southwest of the lock complex at Nigtevecht and nearly opposite Fort Nigtevecht on the west side of the canal. The culvert lies partly beneath the roadway of the Kanaaldijk-Oost. The structure spans more than the full width of the dike. On the canal side, part of the concrete structure projects beyond the road; on the Vecht side, the front of the culvert is bevelled to allow water to drain down. According to the specification and drawings from 1939, the culvert consists of seven reinforced concrete tubes, founded on concrete piles. Between the tubes thick intermediate walls; all under heavy upper covering; the whole lies between reinforced concrete sheet pile walls. Each of the tubes is provided with a sliding slot, two stop plank slots and a machine chamber. The stop plank slots are covered with concrete plates. The sliding slots are provided with steel guides. The machine chamber is covered with 'rattle-free' hatches, with one hole per tube on which a manhole cover is laid. On the outside, the culvert manifests itself as a rectangular concrete volume approximately 35 metres long and 17 metres wide; each of the tubes is approximately 4.50 metres wide. The tubes are not clearly separately visible; the entrance is located below the water surface. On the canal side (west side), the concrete work has two levels: the upper level is provided over its entire length with small buttresses (iron grilles have been installed on these later) between which are (the aforementioned) manhole covers. The lower level is provided at regular intervals with iron plates. Below the plates are the sluice gates. Sluice gates are also located in the tubes on the Vecht side of the dike (east side), but nothing is visible on the outside.
Valuation
The INUNDATION CULVERT at Nigtevecht is of general importance because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Holland Water Line as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially laid out from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-engineer Willem Offerhaus, and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over more than 125 years.
* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building design, which is based on the system of inundation and access defence (20th century). The object is an example of a culvert designed in 1939 with an inundation function for the areas east of the Vecht at Nigtevecht and for the Hoekerpolder between the Vecht and the Merwedekanaal/Amsterdam-Rhine Canal.
* Ensemble values due to its location within the system of the New Holland Water Line in general and in particular in the direct relationship to the nearby, 19th-century navigation locks and the functioning intended since 1939 of the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal within the framework of the New Holland Water Line. There is also a clearly recognizable relationship with the inundation field.
* Situational values due to the still open location on the dike and the proximity of other water structures, namely the locks and Fort Nigtevecht.
* Within the New Holland Water Line, the object is relatively rare because of the very spacious dimensions for a military culvert.
* The object is very well preserved because the culvert is still completely present and recognizable in its original function in the field.
