Cluster 27. Inundatieduiker.
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE Inleiding

Description
Cluster 27. Inundation sluice.
NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE Introduction
INUNDATION SLUICE as an essential functional component of the inundation system of the New Hollandic Waterline. The defence system of the New Hollandic Waterline was primarily based on the controlled inundation of (large) terrain areas. By means of an ingenious system of sluices, sluices, dams, barriers, dike breaches and the like, the necessary water level could be quickly set and maintained within narrow limits. Partly, existing civil water management structures were used for this. Sometimes the works were (greatly) adapted to military requirements. A large part of the works was specially built for the New Hollandic Waterline. One of the frequently applied sluice types was the so-called sluice. This is a closable pipe under a road, through a dike or dam for the discharge or intake of water. Via sluices, the inundation fields separated by roads and quays remained connected to each other.
The inundation sluice dates from 1939 and is located on the east side of the Vecht in the south-eastern corner of the current Zuilense Ring and the Sweserengseweg and crosses here the Vechtdijk - relocated due to the construction of the Zuilense Ring, on which a now country road lies. The sluice could also be defended by means of nearby concrete and earth works. The later added pumping station north of the sluice does not form part of the protected complex Concrete Works Maarsseveen - De Klop.
Description
INUNDATION SLUICE from 1939 which formed a connection between the Vecht and the rear polder area of the Polder Oostwaard. The sluice, with a pipe oriented approximately north-south, has concrete walls and could be closed by means of shutter beams. On the south side of the sluice, the Vecht side, there are three slots into which beams could be placed; on the other side of the country road the sluice is provided with one such slot. Closure and consolidation as a dam sluice meant that the intended inundation level could be maintained.
Valuation
The INUNDATION SLUICE within the complex Concrete Works Maarsseveen - De Klop is of general importance because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially implemented from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major-Engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.
* Architectural-historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic building, which is based on: a. the system of inundation and access defence (19th and 20th century).
This component from 1939 is an example of a historical water engineering expression related to military-strategic building, namely a sluice serving as an inundation and dam sluice.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with multiple components of the complex.
* The component is relatively rare as an example of a sluice which in the final period of the operation of the New Hollandic Waterline was still specifically built for inundation purposes.
* The component is reasonably well preserved because it can still be recognised in the field in its original function.
