Cluster 27.

NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE Inleiding

Cluster 27. Inlet, Dam and Lock Sluice II at the Nedereindsevaart (Sluice of the Polder Buitenweg).

NEW DUTCH WATERLINE Introduction

INLET, DAM AND LOCK SLUICE II AT THE NEDEREINDSEVAART (Sluice of the Polder Buitenweg) as an essential functional component of the inundation system of the New Dutch Waterline. The defence system of the New Dutch Waterline was based in the first place on the controlled flooding of (large) areas of terrain. Controlled inundation required an ingenious system of waterworks, such as sluices, weirs and canals, by means of which the necessary water level could be rapidly set and maintained within narrow limits. Many different types of sluices were applied, depending on the location where they functioned in the system. Sometimes already existing shipping, drainage or check sluices were used, but many new ones were also built or existing ones (substantially) adapted. The latter was the case with the Sluice of the Polder Buitenweg.

On the Nedereindsevaart there are still two windmills; at both a small lock sluice has been created. The south-western of the two belonged to Polder Westbroek (under Maarsseveen) and is known as the Nedereindsesluis. This sluice is part of the waterway). The north-eastern sluice belongs to the Polder Buitenweg. Together the two small sluices form an exceptional ensemble, whose significance gains extra dimension from the two polder mills.

The sluice complex of the Nedereindsesluis and the Sluice of the Polder Buitenweg is located on and in the Nedereindsevaart, which was dug centuries ago to allow surplus water from Polder Westbroek to flow away to the Vecht and to allow vessels to pass. Due to subsidence of the soil and peat and clay strata, the ground level came to lie lower than the water level of the Vecht, which made a polder mill necessary to pump the polder dry. Around 1834 the polder was divided and next to the existing mill a tilting water mill was built to pump the separated Polder Buitenweg dry. Beside the mill lies the sluice, possibly also dating from around 1834. In 1900 a small pumping station was built on the north side of the Nedereindsesluis for Polder Westbroek, which (largely) replaced the mill pumping.

Description

INLET, DAM AND LOCK SLUICE II AT THE NEDEREINDSEVAART (Sluice of the Polder Buitenweg) as part of the Nedereindsevaart, a waterway and drainage system for the peat areas lying east of the Vecht under Maarsseveen. The lock sluice, executed somewhat lens-shaped and with steep, plastered banks (approximately 20.00 x 3.75 m) presumed in origin to date from around 1834, but has been adapted in the context of use within the New Dutch Waterline to serve as an inlet and dam sluice. The lock chamber walls are fitted with iron bands, on which small bollards. Outside the heads, keywalls sloping upward at an angle. In the western head a concrete gate with slide, to be operated with a rod. Over the eastern head a wooden bridge with wooden railings and ironwork.

Valuation

The INLET, DAM AND LOCK SLUICE II AT THE NEDEREINDSEVAART (Sluice of the Polder Buitenweg) is of general interest because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Dutch Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially implemented from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and Major Engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of combined civil and military-strategic construction, which is based on the system of inundation and access defence (19th century).

This concerns a structure presumed to date from around 1834, adapted for use within the New Dutch Waterline and related to military-strategic construction, being an expression of historical water construction, namely a civil sluice, with as a secondary function that of a military sluice serving the inundation.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Dutch Waterline in general and because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The component is representative because it emphasizes and illustrates the application of previously existing sluice works in the functioning of the NHW.

* The component is reasonably well preserved because the main form and structural elements have remained recognizable.
