NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding
Waardering

Description
Cluster 14.
NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE
Introduction
SOUTHERN SLUICE ('s-Graveland) as a civil and military waterworks component of the New Hollandic Waterline, located in the 's-Gravelandse Vaart, approximately 125 m north of the Hilversumsch Canal and the road Hilversum-Haarlem (Vreelandseweg). The defence system of the New Hollandic Waterline was in the first place based on the controlled flooding of (large) terrain areas. Controlled inundation required an ingenious system of waterworks, such as sluices, weirs and canals, with which the necessary water level could be quickly set and maintained within narrow limits. Many different types of sluices were applied, depending on the location where they functioned in the system. Sometimes already existing navigation, drainage or check sluices were used, but many new ones were also built or existing ones (strongly) adapted. Sometimes local water level differences between individual polder units had to be bridged by incorporating or using check sluicelets in existing quays or dykes. Schotbalk barriers in channels or even in cuts in quays were often applied for this purpose, but also so-called channels with wooden or iron lifting doors or culverts with sluice gates were used for this purpose. The Southern Sluice, at the southern end of the 's-Gravelandsche Vaart, is an existing small lock sluice, which was adapted for the purposes of the New Hollandic Waterline. The sluice was of particular importance in the context of inundation water flow through. The sluice was restored in 1980 and was then provided with new wooden doors, among other things. Over the sluice a bridge renewed in concrete.
Description
The SOUTHERN SLUICE ('s-Graveland), a small lock sluice from 1638, consists of approximately 25 m long and 3.75 m wide masoned brick chamber with constructive application of natural stone blocks. On the same level as the chamber a northern lock head and on the south side a lock head located via a gentle slope approximately 50 cm higher than the chamber. Partly on both sides wing walls and on the east side a small channel opening into the chamber, possibly a remnant of the former boundary between Holland and Utrecht. Wooden pointed doors, renewed 1980, with manual operation of gates by means of iron brackets on the doors. The doors close against the chamber walls.
Valuation
The SOUTHERN SLUICE ('s-Graveland) is of general importance because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.
* Architectural-historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic building construction, which was based on and arose as a consequence of the system of inundation and access defence (19th and 20th century).
This concerns a component from 1638, namely an expression of historical water engineering related to military-strategic building construction in the form of an existing civil lock sluice, which was used and adapted for military purposes.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.
* The component is representative (characteristic) because it is a good example of application of a lock sluice in a combined military and civil function, especially in the context of water flow for inundations.
* The component is fairly well preserved because it has remained essentially unchanged and in function.
