The register's description

Cluster 12. Houten Schotbalkenloods.

NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE

Inleiding

Cluster 12. Wooden Schotbalk Storage Building.

NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE

Introduction

WOODEN SCHOTBALK STORAGE BUILDING, built in or around 1934 and intended for the storage of beams to enable the lock to be closed. At various locations within and outside fort grounds, wooden, stone and metal ('tin') storage buildings have come into being over the decades to serve as (provisional or permanent) storage space, storage, shelter for people or materials, hospital, fire service, horse stable, guardhouse, etc. This schotbalk storage building can also be counted among this category of storage facilities. A large part of these buildings has meanwhile deteriorated, been demolished or relocated, but others still exist in situ. Sometimes these are particularly simple structures of small dimensions, but there are also more complex and larger examples. The schotbalk storage building at the lock bij 't Hemeltje has been restored, whereby form and typology have been respected.

Description

WOODEN SCHOTBALK STORAGE BUILDING from around 1934 on the north-eastern side of the lock bij 't Hemeltje, with a group shelter Type P to the north-west of this. The fully pot-roofed building, without window openings, comprises one storey and is built on a rectangular floor plan of approximately 11.00 x 5.50 m. The gabled roof covered with red tiles is terminated by wooden wind braces. The (main) entrance is located in a small, flat-roofed, also wooden extension on the (end) north-western side. The interior has not been visited.

Valuation

The WOODEN SCHOTBALK STORAGE BUILDING is of general interest on account of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realised from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of wooden construction related to military-strategic building, which is based on the system of inundation and access defence (20th century).

This concerns a component from the interwar period, namely a wooden storage building from around 1934.

* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline. Also on account of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex and in particular with the lock bij 't Hemeltje.

* The component is representative because it is an example of a schotbalk storage building built in the interwar period at a lock constructed in the same period.

* The component is fairly well preserved because the principal form and function have remained clearly recognisable.
