Cluster 12. Schutsluis/Inundatievoorziening.
NIEUWE HOLLANDSE WATERLINIE
Inleiding
Omschrijving

Description
Cluster 12. Lock/Inundation Provision.
NEW HOLLANDIC WATERLINE
Introduction
LOCK / INUNDATION PROVISION as part of the waterway opened in 1937 from the Vecht to Hilversum via the Hilversumsch Canal and constructed in or around 1935. The defence system of the New Hollandic Waterline was primarily based on the controlled flooding of (large) terrain areas. Controlled inundation required an ingenious system of waterworks, such as locks, weirs and canals, by which the necessary water level could be set and maintained quickly and within narrow limits. Many different types of locks were employed, depending on the location where they functioned in the system. Sometimes existing navigation, drainage or check locks were used, but many new ones were also built or existing ones (substantially) modified. Sometimes local water-level differences between individual polder units had to be bridged by installing or using check gates in existing quays or dykes. For this purpose, schotbalk gates in waterways or even in cuts in quays were often employed, but also so-called outlets with wooden or iron lifting gates or sluices with sluice gates were used for this purpose. The lock, known as Sluis bij 't Hemeltje, lies to the south of Overmeer, at the location of a former meander in the Vecht, now the water body De Nes; the lock was fitted with sluice gates. Over the lock there are now three lifting bridges, of which two are at the north-western end. A new one for motor traffic, one for cyclists and mopeds (which was originally intended for the construction of the new bridge for all traffic); a small lifting bridge at the south-eastern end is intended for the lock keeper and pedestrians. The two old bridges had no function within the framework of the New Hollandic Waterline. The lock chamber was partly renewed and restored around the year 2000. The lock chamber is partly executed in sheet-pile profiles and partly in concrete.
Description
The LOCK / INUNDATION PROVISION which as part of the waterway via the Hilversumsch Canal was constructed in or around 1935, had as an auxiliary function that of water intake for the purpose of inundation of the reclaimed polder Horstermeerpolder. The lock measures 54.00 x 7.50 m, with a depth of 2.90 m. The lock heads are executed in reinforced concrete with steel strips on the corners. The lock is provided with rolling gates that retract into the lock heads, which made it possible to open them in the case of necessary inundation even at high water in the Vecht. Rolling gates were employed in the 1930s in several places in locks with large head difference, but rarely for military purposes. The lock is also provided with schotbalk seatings to install beams for more permanent water barriers.
Valuation
The LOCK / INUNDATION PROVISION is of general interest on account of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially constructed from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others over approximately 125 years.
* Architectural-historical values in particular as an expression of military-strategic construction, which is based on the system of inundation and access defence (20th century).
The component is an example of a military-strategic construction-related expression of historical water engineering dating from approximately 1935, serving as a civil lock with an auxiliary military function as an inundation lock.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the New Hollandic Waterline. Also on account of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex and in particular with the adjacent schotbalk storage building.
* The component is representative (characteristic) because it as a recognisable component from the final period of construction of the New Hollandic Waterline has been added to the inundation system, with as a special feature the application of rolling gates.
* The component is reasonably well preserved because the lock with the structure for the inundation system has been largely preserved, although it has been structurally renewed.
