Inleiding

Description
Cluster 42.
Introduction
TWO WOODEN SHEDS X and Z, as not bomb-proof, later added component to the fort complex for storing material or personnel. In various locations within and outside fort grounds, over the course of decades, wooden, stone and metal ('tin') sheds have been constructed to serve as (provisional or permanent) storage space, storage, shelter for people or material, hospital, fire station, horse stable, guardhouse, etc. A large part of these sheds has by now deteriorated, been demolished or relocated, but others still exist in situ. Sometimes these are particularly simple structures of small size, but there are also more complex and larger examples.
Description
Slightly to the south of the centre, located on the fort are TWO WOODEN SHEDS X and Z. The sheds are virtually identical. Both are built on a rectangular plan of approximately 35 x 8 m. The sheds have one storey under a gabled roof covered with dampened, hollow tiles. The sheds were built after 1910 and replaced an example from 1891. Sheds X and Z have a brick plinth on which sits a wooden superstructure of mouldings and grooved sections. Shed X has in its facades mainly windows with double, nine-pane casement windows and Shed Z has in its facades mainly double four-pane casement windows with two-pane fanlights. Both have a number of roof dormers in the roof slopes.
Valuation
TWO WOODEN SHEDS X and Z at the Fort bij Vechten are of general importance because of:
* Cultural-historical values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 realised by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for approximately 125 years.
* Military-historical values as part of a continuous military defence line between the former Zuiderzee and the Biesbosch. This consisted mainly of a coherent system of inundation fields and associated inundation facilities and fields of fire. This system was supplemented with various types of constructed or created (defence) works dating from different periods that served to or contributed to the closure of terrain not to be inundated or other accesses.
* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of construction related to military-strategic engineering, based on the system of inundation and access defence (19th and 20th century).
These are components dating from after 1910, namely storage sheds, which were built as replacements for older examples.
* Ensemble value and situational values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.
* The components are representative because they are examples of a shed designed for a defence work.
* The components are reasonably well preserved because the main form and constructional detailing, as well as various components have remained intact.
