Inleiding

Introduction

BOMB-PROOF MAGAZINE T, as built component of the Fort at Vechten and of a type that is provided with an earth covering on three sides and on top and that only has a facade on the gorge side. Magazines are buildings for storage / keeping of materiel and gunpowder etc. Depending on the period of construction - and thus the expected impact force of projectiles - one spoke of 'bomb-proof buildings', when they were considered to be capable of withstanding a pre-defined number of impacts from heavy calibre.

Description

BOMB-PROOF MAGAZINE T located on the main or front bastion, consisting of two rooms behind a mortared facade with bevelled top corners and further semicircular and provided on top with earth covering.

Valuation

The BOMB-PROOF MAGAZINE T is of general interest because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie, as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently by others for approximately 125 years strengthened and improved.

* Military-historical values as part of a continuous military defence line between the former Zuiderzee and the Biesbosch. This consisted mainly of a coherent system of inundation fields and associated inundation facilities and of fields of fire. This system was supplemented with various types of built or constructed (defence) works dating from different periods that served to or contributed to closure of terrain not to be inundated or other accesses.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building, which was based - on the system of inundation and access defence (19th century) - and on the race with the increasingly strengthening offensive means (19th century).

This concerns an example of a magazine from 1881, which underwent a modification in the facade some tens of years later.

* Ensemble value and situational values, as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Also because of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The building is representative (characteristic) because it still displays physical features that were the reason for construction at that time.

* The building is reasonably well preserved because in terms of structure and physical appearance the essentials of the condition in the 1880s have been retained.
