Inleiding

Introduction

BOMBPROOF QUARTERS AND MAIN STOREHOUSE J as a constructed component of the Fort at Vechten. Quarters are a (permanent) accommodation for officers or personnel and a main storehouse contained among other things the necessary provisions and other essential supplies. The quarters and main storehouse is of a type of bombproof structures that is provided with an earth covering on three sides and on top and that has only a facade on the gorge side. Depending on the period of construction - and thus the expected impact force of projectiles - one spoke of 'bombproof buildings' when they were considered to be capable of withstanding a previously defined number of heavy calibre hits.

Description

Located to the northeast of the barracks, BOMBPROOF QUARTERS AND MAIN STOREHOUSE J from 1869 / 1881, consisting of two rooms behind a brick facade with an entrance section, covered by an earth layer. Originally the building had a different purpose, but it was rebuilt in 1881 for the aforementioned functions.

Valuation

The BOMBPROOF QUARTERS AND MAIN STOREHOUSE J is of general importance because of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie, as this was designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus was realized and subsequently by others over approximately 125 years strengthened and improved.

* Military-historical values as part of a continuous military defence line between the former Zuiderzee and the Biesbosch. This consisted mainly of a connected system of inundation fields and associated inundation facilities and of fire fields. This system was supplemented with diverse types of constructed or developed (defensive) works dating from different periods that served to or contributed to the closure of terrain not to be inundated or other accesses.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building art, which is based - on the system of inundation and access defence (19th century) - and on the race with the strengthening offensive means (19th century).

This concerns here an example of a bombproof accommodation with a storehouse for provisions etc. from 1869 / 1881.

* Ensemble value and situational values, as components of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Also because of the functional and physical connection with the other components of the complex.

* The building is representative (characteristic) because it still displays the physical characteristics that at that time gave rise to the construction and the rebuilding.

* The building is reasonably well preserved because as to structure and physical appearance the main features of the condition in the 1880s are preserved.
