Inleiding

Introduction

BOMBPROOF REVERSE BATTERY G WITH POTERNE as part of the close defence of the Fort bij Vechten. Reverse batteries are designed to cover the moat, projecting parts of the main wall of a fort or fortification and the terrain directly behind it, and consist of casemates or other gun positions placed (at an angle) in the main wall. Depending on the period of construction - and thus the expected impact force of projectiles - one spoke of 'bombproof buildings' when they were considered capable of withstanding a specified number of impacts from heavy calibre. Poternes are covered and/or bombproof passages, for example through the main wall, which provide access to a fort or fortification or which connect components.

Description

Located on the northeastern side bastion, earth-covered, BOMBPROOF REVERSE BATTERY G from 1869, consisting of a masonry facade, in which a rounded-arch double door, as well as living quarters, a powder magazine and some gun rooms. The facade is bevelled at the ends. The door provides access to the POTERNE which leads to the gun rooms. The arched loopholes are filled in with masonry.

Valuation

The BOMBPROOF REVERSE BATTERY G WITH POTERNE is of general importance on account of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie, as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially constructed from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently by others over approximately 125 years strengthened and improved.

* Military-historical values as part of a continuous military defence line between the former Zuiderzee and the Biesbosch. This consisted mainly of a coherent system of inundation fields and associated inundation means and fire fields. This system was supplemented with diverse types of built or constructed (defence) works dating from different periods which served to or contributed to the closure of terrain not to be inundated or other accesses.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building technique, which was based - on the system of inundation and access defence (19th century) - on the race with increasingly powerful offensive means (19th century).

This concerns an example of a reverse battery with bombproof passage through the main wall from the period 1867-1870.

* Ensemble value and situational values, as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Also on account of the functional and physical coherence with the other components of the complex.

* The building is representative (characteristic) because it still displays the physical characteristics that gave rise to its construction at that time.

* The building is fairly well preserved because in terms of structure and physical appearance the essential aspects of the condition in the 1870s of the 19th century have been preserved.
