Inleiding

Omschrijving

Waardering

FORTAANLEG MET AARDWERKEN EN HOOFDWAL, WAARIN (RESTEN VAN) GESCHUTSOPSTELPLAATSEN, REMISES EN FLANKBATTERIJEN, MET TERREPLEIN, GLACIS WAARIN SCHUILPLAATSEN EN RESTEN VAN LOOPGRAVEN EN BINNEN- EN BUITENGRACHT, MET (OMLEIDINGS- EN ONDERHOUDS-)WEGEN EN MET OORSPRONKELIJK DOOR GRENSPALEN AANGEDUIDE ZONE is van algemeen belang vanwege:

Cluster 40.

Introduction

FORTIFICATION WITH EARTHWORKS AND MAIN RAMPART, CONTAINING (REMAINS OF) GUN EMPLACEMENTS, MAGAZINES AND FLANK BATTERIES, WITH PARADE GROUND, GLACIS CONTAINING SHELTERS AND REMAINS OF TRENCHES AND INNER AND OUTER MOAT, WITH (DIVERSION AND MAINTENANCE) ROADS AND WITH A ZONE ORIGINALLY MARKED BY BOUNDARY POSTS as basic components of a closed defensive work. The Fort at Rijnauwen is one of the polygonal forts belonging to the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie provided with characteristic earthen and built-up components. Forts and similar works were usually constructed on the basis of pre-prepared earth bodies, which served as a foundation and were intended to prevent subsidence in (wet and soft) soil. In the construction of the works, apart from this usually tactically 'pre-formed' earth body - which in itself already fulfilled or could fulfill a defensive role - a specific layout was also realized which was intended to increase defensive strength, ensure the safety of the garrison and facilitate internal and external transport and traffic. This resulted in, among other things, earth coverings for various structures to make them less vulnerable to enemy fire, earth ramparts that covered buildings and open areas and determined contours, covered approaches, paved paths and parade grounds. The earthworks were laid out in greatly varying ground plans, often with one or more bastions, which could also differ in form. Around the earth body came - if possible - a wet moat, while the works were usually surrounded by a military boundary, which was marked with boundary posts. Over the moat there was usually a (partly removable) bridge - various types exist - but sometimes there was a fixed bank connection, for example in the form of a dam. Bridges or dams could form part of the road system. Along the outside of the moats there was often a road or path. These could be laid out both in the form of a covered way and also at or even above ground level. These roads or paths could have various functions, ranging from public road to maintenance path, and also from military covered way to exclusive access road to the fort. Outside the wet moat there is moreover often a zone (from of old and sometimes still in part) marked with boundary posts as such over which the Ministry of War had authority: the Military Land. The Fort at Rijnauwen does not differ in principle from this general picture; however, the partly double-constructed moat and the pentagonal redoubt as the final defensive point, as well as the system of flank batteries for close defence, are rare. The ground plan of Fort at Rijnauwen is an irregular quadrilateral. The front and side fronts are somewhat broken outward in relation to the fields of fire of the flank batteries. The main work is surrounded by deeply laid inner and outer moats. The high outer rampart functioned as a glacis, in which small concrete works, such as (group) shelters, were placed in various locations. The parade ground is planted with young trees and intersected with paths. The fort was used by the German occupier in the Second World War. Due to executions, a brick memorial wall and a burial ground for executed Dutchmen were established on the parade ground in 1946. Seven memorial stones with a total of dozens of names and texts date from 1981 and an associated bell tower from 1985.

Description

FORTIFICATION WITH EARTHWORKS AND MAIN RAMPART, CONTAINING (REMAINS OF) GUN EMPLACEMENTS, MAGAZINES AND FLANK BATTERIES, WITH PARADE GROUND, GLACIS CONTAINING SHELTERS AND REMAINS OF TRENCHES AND INNER AND OUTER MOAT, WITH (DIVERSION AND MAINTENANCE) ROADS AND WITH A ZONE ORIGINALLY MARKED BY BOUNDARY POSTS The Fort at Rijnauwen was founded as an advanced fort as part of the so-called second fortification ring around Utrecht, which was built in the period 1867-1871. The fort consists of an inner area - the parade ground - surrounded by a high rampart - the main rampart - with a moat around it. This moat connects on the west side to a semicircular remnant of the moat around the redoubt. Approximately three-quarters around the fort is a glacis, in which on the east side remain trenches from the years 1914-1918 and of a group nest. The glacis is largely surrounded by an outer moat. On the east side of the fort there is in front of the main rampart - called the front wall - a caponier or advanced defensive work. A postern, or covered passage, leads to the caponier. The two sides (faces) of the caponier, which form an angle of 60 degrees at the point, are flanked from the front wall by two Reiche flank batteries (named after the German fortress engineer Reiche). Furthermore, a flank battery has been built out at each of the corner points of the main rampart, all earth-covered. Behind the postern is the earth-covered, bombproof barracks, built of red brick with decorative components in yellow stone and ashlar brick lisenes. In the western main rampart two entrances executed as guardhouses with posterns with facades, executed in brick, with decorations in yellow stone and coupled lisenes with bossage work. Between these two entrances the pentagonal redoubt with five circular outbuildings at the corners, the whole originally surrounded by a narrow moat and a glacis. Furthermore on the inner area a road system and five (originally more) magazines. All buildings from the period 1869-1880 are built of masonry, consist mainly of vaulted spaces and are topped with sand and earth layers. In the buildings ingeniously constructed systems for the discharge and retention of rainwater. On the main rampart fifteen emplacements for guns. On and/or around the fort body remain of emplacements, while remains or traces of trenches and other works are (possibly) present. On the parade ground a brick memorial wall dating from 1946 with memorial plaque and relief with a standing female figure with bowed head and a small burial ground for executed Dutchmen. The memorial wall contains the text: 'SO THAT WE NEVER FORGET.' The burial ground is enclosed by fencing. Along the moats there is a diversion road and remains of a maintenance path. The zone originally marked with boundary posts as such over which the Ministry of War had authority, the so-called Military Land, is indicated on the map accompanying this document.

Valuation

FORTIFICATION WITH EARTHWORKS AND MAIN RAMPART, CONTAINING (REMAINS OF) GUN EMPLACEMENTS, MAGAZINES AND FLANK BATTERIES, WITH PARADE GROUND, GLACIS CONTAINING SHELTERS AND REMAINS OF TRENCHES AND INNER AND OUTER MOAT, WITH (DIVERSION AND MAINTENANCE) ROADS AND WITH A ZONE ORIGINALLY MARKED BY BOUNDARY POSTS is of general interest by reason of:

* Cultural-historical values as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie, as designed by C.R.T. Kraijenhoff and initially realized from 1815 by him, Jan Blanken and major-engineer Willem Offerhaus and subsequently strengthened and improved by others for approximately 125 years.

* Military-historical values as part of a continuous military defence line between the former Zuiderzee and the Biesbosch. This consisted mainly of a coherent system of inundation fields and associated inundation facilities and of fields of fire. This system was supplemented with various, dating from different periods, types of built or laid-out (defensive) works that served to or contributed to the closure of non-inundable areas or other accesses.

* Architectural-historical values, in particular as an expression of military-strategic building practice, which is based - on the system of inundation and access defence (19th century) - and on the race with increasingly powerful offensive weapons (19th and 20th centuries).

This concerns a complex from the period 1867-1886, forming part of the second fortification ring around Utrecht. The complex is also of architectural-historical value as an example of a complete fort of the caponier system, thus as an advanced defensive work.

* Ensemble value and situational values by reason of the location within the system of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie in general and also by reason of the functional and physical coherence between the components of the complex. Finally, there is here a preserved relationship of the earthworks with the field of fire.

* Archaeological values by reason of possibly still present remains and traces of trenches and other works.

* The complex component is representative (characteristic) because it still displays the distinctive physical characteristics and the major environmental characteristics that at the time occasioned its construction.

* The complex component is reasonably well preserved because in terms of structure and physical appearance the essentials of the condition in the 1880s have been preserved.
