Inleiding
- de cultuurhistorische waarden, van belang vanwege de wijze waarop de scholen de toen levende ideeën over het onderwijs weerspiegelden: licht, lucht en ruimte. Met name de situering in het groen met rondom de open ruimte is hiervan een kenmerk en past in het concept van het dorp Nagele als geheel. De drie scholen zijn een toonbeeld van de wederopbouw en de toen heersende verzuiling, en een goed voorbeeld van de naoorlogse scholenbouw voor het lager onderwijs;
- de architectuurhistorische waarden, vanwege de zoektocht van de architecten naar een vormentaal die een tegenhanger vormt van klassieke composities en organische vormen en waarin zij vasthouden aan de geometrie en de aritmetica als compositorische instrumenten. De architectuur is met weinig middelen toch interessant. Het eenvoudige vocabulaire van rechthoeken bepaalt de hoofdopzet door een herhaling van kleine celvormige eenheden. Dit geeft het ontwerp raffinement, in vorm en materiaal. Van belang als voorloper van het latere ontwerp voor het Burgerweeshuis in Amsterdam. Van belang vanwege het toepassen van beton, zoals de dragende betonnen raamwerken in de gevels, de betonnen plint en de betonnen baldakijnen voor de ingang;

Description
Introduction
The ROMAN CATHOLIC SCHOOL BUILDING with PLAYGROUND is located in the southwestern corner of De Brink, the rectangular green heart of Nagele. Positioned next to the former Roman Catholic church, now a museum.
The school is named after the Frisian Carmelite friar Titus Brandsma, also a professor, publicist and Dutch resistance fighter during the Second World War (died in 1942 at Dachau).
This school building has the minimal size of four classrooms in the growth model of architects Aldo E. van Eyck and H.P.D. van Ginkel. On the south side, the school building has a small square garden with low planting.
The concrete plinth has recently been rendered, as a result of which the concrete window frames lie in the same plane as the plinth and are no longer visible as a separate component. Recently, double glazing or secondary glazing has been installed in all frames. The original tilt and turn windows no longer function. Sun screens have been installed above all window openings.
Description
The ROMAN CATHOLIC SCHOOL BUILDING consists of one storey beneath a flat roof. The floor plan is clear and consists of rectangular classrooms linked together with a corridor running along them. The four classrooms are positioned in rotation (around the chimney) and in staggered relationship to one another. The corridor, sanitary facilities, storage spaces and the headmaster's room are located in attached lower storeys. The classrooms are positioned so that the open walls face south and the pupils look out onto the green outdoor space.
The facades of the school consist of a concrete plinth with a wide roof cornice. Both elements emphasise the horizontal character of the buildings. The cornice is supported by a concrete rectangular window frame filled with glass, with on either side two windows placed one above the other, with a tilt window opening outwards at the top and a window opening outwards below. Originally the frame of this double window was narrow and dark-coloured. In the corners of the facade surfaces, built-up walls.
The PLAYGROUND is situated to the north of the school and is partly enclosed by the building and open to De Brink. On this site there was originally a concrete sandbox and a bicycle shed. The entrance to each school is accentuated by a concrete slab on which a concrete canopy on six legs (corbels) is placed. The headmaster's room is located in a partially detached building block next to the school entrance. From this room, an elongated window provides a view of the playground.
Assessment
The ROMAN CATHOLIC SCHOOL BUILDING with PLAYGROUND at Nagele, built in 1957 and designed by architects A.E. van Eyck and H.P.D. van Ginkel, is an evident milestone in the development of architecture and building technology in the Netherlands from the period 1940-1958. The school building is part of a complex of three schools. Of national importance because of:
- the cultural-historical values, important because of the way in which the schools reflected the prevailing ideas about education at the time: light, air and space. In particular, the siting in greenery with open space all around is a characteristic of this and fits into the concept of the village of Nagele as a whole. The three schools are an exemplar of reconstruction and the prevailing pillarisation of the time, and a good example of post-war primary school buildings;
- the architectural-historical values, because of the architects' search for a formal language that provides a counterpoint to classical compositions and organic forms and in which they maintain geometry and arithmetic as compositional instruments. The architecture is interesting despite using few means. The simple vocabulary of rectangles determines the main layout through a repetition of small cellular units. This gives the design refinement, in form and material. Important as a precursor to the later design for the Burgerweeshuis in Amsterdam. Important because of the application of concrete, such as the load-bearing concrete frames in the facades, the concrete plinth and the concrete canopies at the entrance;
- the urban planning values, because of the dispersed location in the rectangular green heart of the village of Nagele. The openness of the buildings emphasises the interaction between inside and outside.
