Inleiding

In

lager onderwijs;

weinig middelen toch interessant.

openheid van de gebouwen benadrukt de wisselwerking tussen binnen en buiten;

fietsenstalling.

Introduction

The PUBLIC SCHOOL BUILDING with PLAYGROUND and BICYCLE SHELTER is located in the west of De Brink, the rectangular green heart of Nagele.

This school building has the maximum size of six classrooms in the growth model of the architects Aldo E. van Eyck and H.P.D. van Ginkel. In contrast to the other schools within the complex, De Ringloop has two entrances on the north side. This entrance also rests on a large concrete slab and has a portico on six posts. On the south side, each school building has a small square garden with low planting.

Description

The PUBLIC SCHOOL BUILDING consists of one storey under a flat roof. The floor plan is clear and consists of six adjoining rectangular classrooms along which a corridor is placed. Relative to each other, the classrooms are rotated (around the chimney) and staggered. The corridor, sanitary facilities, storage spaces and the headmaster's room are located in adjoining lower storeys. The classrooms are positioned such that the open walls face south and west and the pupils look out onto the green outdoor space.

The facades of the school consist of a concrete plinth with a wide cornice. Both elements emphasize the horizontal character of the buildings. The cornice is supported by a concrete rectangular window frame filled with glass, with two windows placed one above the other on either side, with above a hopper window opening outward and below an outward-opening window. The frame of this double window is narrow and dark-coloured. In the corners of the facade surfaces are built walls of brick.

The PLAYGROUND is located north of the school building and is partly enclosed by the building and open to De Brink. Originally at this location there was a concrete sandpit and a BICYCLE SHELTER. The open bicycle shelter consists of a construction of nine steel posts on footings with steel beams on which curved corrugated sheets rest as covering. The end facing the street is closed off by a rectangular plate.

The entrance to the school is accentuated by a concrete slab on which a concrete canopy on six legs is placed. The headmaster's room is located in a partly detached building block next to the school entrance. From this room, an elongated window gives a view of the playground.

Valuation

The PUBLIC SCHOOL BUILDING with PLAYGROUND and BICYCLE SHELTER in Nagele, built in 1957 and designed by the architects A.E. van Eyck and H.P.D. van Ginkel, is an evident milestone in the development of architecture and building technology in the Netherlands from the period 1940-1958. The school building is part of a complex of three schools. Of national importance because of:

- the cultural-historical values, because of the way the schools reflected the prevailing ideas about education at that time: light, air and space. In particular, the location in green space with open space all around is a characteristic of this and fits into the concept of the village of Nagele as a whole. The three schools are an example of reconstruction and the then prevailing pillarization, and a good example of post-war primary school building;

- the architectural-historical values, because of the architects' search for a formal language that forms a counterpart to classical compositions and organic forms and in which they adhere to geometry and arithmetic as compositional instruments. The architecture is interesting despite using few means. The simple vocabulary of rectangles determines the main layout through a repetition of small cellular units. This gives the design refinement, in form and material. Important as a precursor to the later design for the Burgerweeshuis in Amsterdam. Important because of the application of concrete, such as the load-bearing concrete frames in the facades, the concrete plinth and the concrete canopies for the entrance.

- the urban planning values, of particular significance because of the dispersed location in the rectangular green heart of the village of Nagele. The openness of the buildings emphasizes the interaction between inside and outside;

- the completeness and recognizability of the school building and the playground with bicycle shelter.
