Inleiding

Description
Introduction
ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, dedicated at construction to the Sweet Name of Jesus, built in 1955/1956 and consecrated in 1957. Since the end of the 1980s of the twentieth century, the church and parish have borne the name "San Salvator", the name of its predecessors on this site. It was built on the site of several predecessors, the last of which was destroyed in the Second World War. The church is a defining feature of the centre of the village of Oeffelt, surrounded by historic buildings on Kerkplein and on three sides by a cemetery. The church was built in the style of the first period of the Bossche School, designed by Ir. Nico van der Laan, a brother of Dom Hans van der Laan, and is characterised by the application of forms from the early Christian tradition. The metalwork is by J. Noyons from Utrecht, the stained glass by Marius de Leeuw from 's Hertogenbosch, the sculpture by Niel Steenbergen from Teteringen. On the front facade a relief applied in the 1980s, designed by Br. Orestes (Thomas Smids). In the last decade of the twentieth century the priests' choir was renewed to the design of Rik van der Laan, a son of the architect, in a style inspired by the Bossche School.
Description
Church building in three-aisle basilica form, entirely built of marl stone with the application of concrete for window frames and mouldings. The nave has a gabled roof, covered with dampened improved Dutch tiles; the side aisles and sacristy are flat-roofed. On the left side, placed towards the rear, a round tower with low pyramidal roof, connected to the church by a short passage; in the lower part of the tower the baptismal chapel. The flat choir gable has a thermal window with a cross in stained glass, the side gables have high-placed windows coupled in threes, the clerestory square windows and the tower oblong windows, all filled with stained glass with stylised motifs from nature. In one of the stained glass windows a Madonna representation. On both side gables constructed-out confessionals; against the confessional on the right is situated the memorial plaque for Oeffelt civilians killed in the war; on the right side gable, placed towards the rear, the sacristy which has coupled two-part windows and a wooden external door, and is connected to the church by a short passage. The front facade has reserved fields at the location of the side aisles and for the nave an open porch with columns in the same rhythm. In the hall a substantial wooden entrance door with profiled frame, and a facade stone with above it the first stone from the destroyed church. In the interior flat ceilings. Round columns with string course separate off the side aisles. In the nave two rows of pews designed for the church. The choir gallery has a wooden parapet with relief. On either side of the entrance are natural stone quarter-octagonal stoups positioned in the corner of the wall. In the lowered baptismal chapel on a raised platform a natural stone hexagonal baptismal font with brass ornamental metalwork. Behind the adapted priests' choir against the choir wall a stone enclosure with doors in which the tabernacle fitted with ornamental metalwork. On the side altars, against the rear wall of the side aisles images of respectively the Holy Mary and the Sacred Heart. The flat wooden ceiling of the sacristy rests on round columns with string course.
Valuation
Church building in the style of the early Bossche School, of general cultural-historical and architectural-historical and urban-planning significance as an essential exemplar of the post-war reconstruction period in the Netherlands:
- as an intact and recognisable example of the application of traditional forms in the innovative design principles of the Bossche School; - on account of the special use of materials, namely marl; - as a typical and accomplished example from the first period of the oeuvre of architect Nico van der Laan; - on account of the special aesthetic qualities in conjunction with the applied art; - on account of the characteristic round tower, which gives the village identity from afar; - on account of the harmonious integration into the historic buildings of the church square, on a site built with a church for centuries, surrounded by a cemetery.
