Inleiding

N.A. Donkersloot): "AARDE, DOOR HET OFFER GEWIJD, SAMENGEBRACHT UIT GANS HET LAND, TEKEN TOT IN VERREN TIJD VAN HEUGENIS EN VASTEN BAND."

Introduction

Commissioned by the National Committee for War Memorials in 1949-1956, a COMMEMORATIVE MONUMENT WITH TWO LIONS by J.J.P Oud, sculptor J.A. Rädecker and his son J.W. Rädecker in commemoration of Dutch war victims (1940-1945). The reliefs are by P. Gregoire. The Latin text on the front is by J.P. Meerwaldt, the text above the urns on the rear by Anthonie Donker and the verse by A. Roland Holst. The lettering of the verses is by J. van Krimpen. The National Monument, facing the Palace on the Dam, was inaugurated as such by Queen Juliana on 4 May 1956. In 1997 the monument was restored and the sculpture was impregnated according to the Ibach method. The brick core of the pylon was completely rebuilt at that time.

Description

The freestanding commemorative monument stands on the Damplein opposite the Palace on the Dam and faces towards it. It consists of a 22 metre high conical pylon with figures on the front and sides and reliefs of doves on the rear. On the rear side it is enclosed by a semicircular urn wall containing an urn from each province, later supplemented with an urn from Indonesia. The provinces are indicated by sculptured coats of arms.

Along the upper edge of the wall is a line of text incised. On the wall on the inner side are verses by Adriaan Roland Holst that refer to creation and freedom: "NEVER, FROM ORE TO EAGLE, WAS ANY CREATURE FREE UNDER THE SUN, NOR THE SUN ITSELF, NOR THE STARS. BUT SPIRIT BROKE LAW AND SET UPON THE BREACHED GAP MANKIND. FROM THAT FIRSTBORN DESCENDED THE COUNTLESS. DREADING HIS LOFTY GAZE THEIR SWARMS RECOILED WITHIN THE LAW AND BECAME PEOPLES AND STOOD FACING ONE ANOTHER FOR LIFE, BENEATH NIGHT-CLOUDED CONFUSED TRAGEDY, WHICH IS CALLED WORLD. SINCE THEN NO MAN WAS FREE SAVE SUMMONED FROM ABOVE HIS ROOF, NO PEOPLE SAVE GOVERNED FROM ABOVE ITS TOWERS. LET THAT REMAIN WITH US, DELIVERED AS WE WERE FROM THE REIGN OF TERROR OF AN UNDERWORLD. NOT UNGOVERNED, YET GOVERNED ONLY FROM ABOVE THE WORLD REMAINS FREEDOM OUR SHARE".

The Latin text on the front of the commemorative monument is by Dr. J.P. Meerwaldt: "HERE WHERE THE HEART OF THE HOMELAND A MONUMENT WHICH CITIZENS CARRY WITHIN THEIR HEARTS MAY LOOK TOWARD GOD'S STARS."

On the rear above the niches with the urns stands a verse by Anthonie Donker (pseudonym for Prof. Dr. N.A. Donkersloot): "EARTH, BY SACRIFICE CONSECRATED, GATHERED FROM ACROSS THE LAND, SIGN UNTO DISTANT TIME OF MEMORY AND STEADFAST BOND."

The monument stands on a rising series of 6 concentric steps. At approximately 8 metres in front of the concentric steps, on the west side, two lions on round bases are placed, facing towards the Palace. The distance between the lions is approximately 33 metres. The lions are executed in solid travertine. The pylon consists of a brick and concrete core to which travertine plates are hung. The central group of figures of chained men depicts the suffering of the people, flanked by figures symbolising workers' and intellectuals' resistance. Above this, the figure of mother with child commemorates liberation and looks towards a future without war. The doves too symbolise freedom. In the twelve set-in urns is the earth from execution sites and honour burial grounds from the Dutch provinces and Indonesia. The circular steps of basalt blocks with concrete edging symbolically give the monument solid footing on the Dam and at the same time serve to ensure that the monument is approached with due respect. From the monument runs a broad strip of lighter basalt blocks from the highest to the lowest step towards the Dam, creating the effect of a runner.

The siting of the monument was at the time linked to the urban planning redevelopment of this, eastern, part of the Dam (formerly known as Vijgendam). Through its central placement the monument is part of a square that is seen as the heart of Amsterdam. It also acts as a visual counterpart to the Palace opposite. The location is moreover intended to allow the monument to be part of a living square and to be incorporated as an active reminder in the collective memory of the population.

Valuation

The monument is of general importance - because of its special cultural-historical significance as a national symbol of unity; - because of the historical commemorative value linked to its original function as a war memorial and which has meanwhile acquired a broader symbolic value in remembrance of peace and freedom in general; - because of the striking place in the post-war oeuvre of J.J.P. Oud and J.A. Rädecker; - because of its urban planning siting opposite and symbolic relationship with the Palace on the Dam from which the annual commemorative rituals begin.
