Inleiding

Introduction

VENTILATION BUILDING of the Velser Tunnel located on the north bank of the North Sea Canal, forming part of the complex of Ventilation Buildings on either side of the North Sea Canal.

The ventilation building was designed by the office of architect D. Roosenburg (1887-1962). Since 1941, Roosenburg had been involved as an aesthetic advisor in the construction of the Velser Tunnel. The design was developed from 1952 to 1957 in close collaboration with engineer A. Eggink of the Tunnel Construction Directorate Velsen, which after the war became part of the Locks and Weirs Directorate of Rijkswaterstaat. In his design, Roosenburg deliberately chose to have each underground ventilation shaft open above ground into a separate chimney. This resulted in a characteristically slender silhouette with 8 chimneys. The ventilation building is situated slightly set back from the waterfront above the motorway running beneath the North Sea Canal. The building is oriented towards the largely identical ventilation building on the south side of the canal. From both the North Sea Canal and from the motorway, the ventilation building is highly prominent through its tall chimneys and is determinative for the location.

Description

The VENTILATION BUILDING located on the north bank consists of a single-storey building section with a flat roof and T-shaped floor plan. Below ground there are a further 5 basement storeys, the lowest of which is located at the level of the carriageway of the Velser Tunnel at 17.5 m below NAP. The most striking elements of the ventilation building are the 8 characteristic tall chimneys. The 4 tallest chimneys, each 30 m high, are situated two by two on the eastern and western sides of the ventilation building. These chimneys provide air extraction for the Velser Tunnel. In the centre of the ventilation building, arranged one behind the other in a north-south direction, are the other 4 chimneys. These chimneys are each 15 m high and provide air supply to the tunnel. At ground level, ventilators are installed in the chimneys. Below ground level, the chimneys transform into concrete ventilation shafts. The chimneys are composed of round prefabricated concrete discs and a brick shell. To facilitate maintenance and limit costs, the decision was made to clad the chimneys with mottled glazed bricks. The fluted ten-sided form with sides of 1 m stems from an earlier design in which it was assumed that the chimneys would be constructed entirely in concrete. Each chimney terminates in a chimney head that widens towards the top. These chimney heads are each surrounded by 50 openings framed by a white prefabricated concrete square surround. A concrete plate covers the chimney at the top. At ground level, between the chimneys is the single-storey ventilator hall which ensures that the ventilators installed at ground level are sheltered and accessible. The ventilator hall is built on a T-shaped floor plan and has a flat roof with overhang. On the south side, against the long side of the ventilator hall, two elongated single-storey building volumes with flat roofs have been placed, which are slightly lower than the ventilator hall. The above-ground part of the ventilation building is provided with a concrete frame. The facades of the ventilator hall are composed of stacked elongated concrete window panels. The remaining facades are built in the same mottled glazed brick as the chimneys and are surrounded by large four-pane windows. The building is topped with concrete roof plates. The underground parts of the ventilation building are constructed in reinforced concrete. The underground storeys contain service rooms. The storeys are connected to each other by various steel stairs and a lift.

The Velser Tunnel with the carriageways and ventilation channels is not subject to protection. The protection concerns only the ventilation buildings with chimneys and the ventilation shafts up to the connection with the motor tunnel.

Valuation

The VENTILATION BUILDING of the Velser Tunnel on the north bank of the North Sea Canal is of general importance as an essential exemplar of early Post-War Reconstruction from 1940 because of:

- Its cultural-historical value as an expression of post-war development of the ever-increasing motorised road traffic and the necessity to construct new and safe infrastructure for this traffic. The ventilation building also has cultural-historical significance due to the innovative value of the construction process of this ventilation building through the application of prefabricated concrete elements.

- Its architectural-historical value because of the high aesthetic quality of the design of this civil engineering structure. Because of this, the ventilation building is regarded as an exemplar of the manner in which utilitarian building was elevated to architecture during the Post-War Reconstruction period.

- Its situational value because of both the visual and functional relationship with the ventilation building on the south bank. The ventilation building also has situational value because of its visually defining location along the North Sea Canal and above the motorway running beneath the North Sea Canal. Through this, the ventilation building forms a landmark in the landscape.

- The integrity of its exterior.

- Its typological and functional rarity, as the Netherlands has only a limited number of ventilation buildings.
