Inleiding

Introduction

Roman Catholic brick DOMED CHURCH with tower and vestry designed in 1952 by Alphons M. Siebers (1893-1978) and Wilhelm M. van Dael (1912-1985). The architectural firm Van Zantbeek and Schoonis from Sas van Gent was responsible for the execution in the years 1953-1954. The church was built in traditionalist style according to the principles of the Bossche School. It can be understood as the built argument of Siebers in his discussion with J.A.C. Tillema in the Katholiek Bouwblad in 1951-1952 about the values of postwar (Catholic) church building and the relationship between liturgy and architecture. Important artists contributed high-quality work in the form of stone and sculptural work, bronze works and paintings. The church was built as successor to the church partly destroyed on 20 September 1944, with the building location shifting slightly to the southwest and a row of houses being demolished for better urban planning and visual integration with the Markt. The painted Stations of the Cross from 1938 by the Ghent artist Alberic Ysabie - which also depicted parishioners - were taken from the predecessor. The church is known as the Heilige Maria Hemelvaart.

Description

Brick DOMED CHURCH built from composite building volumes around a central domed space in traditionalist style with Byzantine and classical elements. Both on the exterior and in the interior the individual building volumes are clearly recognisable. On the front a narthex and on the apex gable a tufa stone cross. On the southwest corner a square tower with bell under tent roof and a low octagonal staircase tower with concrete spiral staircase. On the southeast side the vestry room. The dome is covered with slate and is crowned by a wooden cross clad with lead. The remaining roof surfaces are covered with blue smoked Dutch tiles. Striking is the large number of arched masonry both in the interior and on the exterior. The church is built in an orange-red brick from Aardenburg with toothed strings under the eaves lines. A lighter coloured brick was used for the interior. The central, slightly longitudinal dome rests on a visible concrete ring instead of on pendentives. In the round-arched windows coloured leaded glass in light tones. The slightly recessed baptistery under the tower is now no longer in use as such and the baptismal font has been moved to the right aisle of the choir. The organ is located on a concrete balcony supported by four natural stone columns.

The window sills and capitals are of Ettringer tufa stone, the floors and steps are laid with Solnhofen tiles and in the choir with quartzite in two tones. In the centre aisle and on the corners of the central space the floor is provided with patterns in quartzite tiles. The steps to the altars are of granite and the altars themselves of Vaurion. The pulpit is executed in Tailfer, a Belgian granite.

In the dome of the semicircular apse a painting from 1955 by artist-priest Egbert Dekkers (1908-1983) depicting the Assumption of Mary. The central representation is flanked by two angels of the Church, the angel on the left tramples war and carries the predecessor church from 1924 on his knee, the angel on the right embodies the growth of Philippine and carries the predecessor church from 1864. A large number of interior elements are by sculptor Niel Steenbergen (1911-1997), namely the bronze plaque on the high altar depicting the Last Supper, the pulpit with the sculptural work of the four evangelists and the sower, the bronze figures on the fence of the baptistery, the working of the lid of the existing neo-Gothic baptismal font and the eight bronze medals in the communion railings with Old and New Testament representations. The large round wrought iron crown under the dome was designed by Siebers. The tufa stone capitals and the cross on the front gable were worked by sculptor Jan Vaes.

Valuation

The DOMED CHURCH has architectural-historical value because of the high-quality aesthetic quality of the design by architects Siebers and Van Dael.

The church has cultural-historical value because of its importance as a particular expression of pure and expressive church architecture in the tradition of the Delft and Bossche schools, in which classical formal principles and numerical proportions in Catholic church building were central.

Of particular craft quality is the masonry. The use of a concrete ring to support the central dome is innovative. The church stands out for its extensive and varied use of different types of natural stone and the high-quality contributions to sculpture, bronze work and paintings by important Catholic artists from the post-war reconstruction.

The building and its furnishings have been preserved in a particularly intact and complete state. For this reason the church represents rarity value.
