Inleiding
* vanwege situering in agrarisch landschap?

Description
Introduction
INSTITUTE FOR CROP VARIETY RESEARCH (I.V.R.O.) as main component of the complex 'Groot Nergena' executed in the period 1952-1954 on behalf of the Department of Agriculture for the purposes of research and registration of cultivation, processing and production methods in the interest of the post-war business-like approach to the agricultural sector. The building contains spaces for botanical variety research, cultural value research of varieties, independent crop testing, statistical processing of data and administrative staff.
The I.V.R.O. was independently designed by M. BOLTEN (born 1916) as right hand of national architect G. FRIEDHOFF. The design was influenced both by the history of the site and the 19th-century remains of the originally 18th-century garden layout of the former estate 'de Nergena' as well as the modern-traditional building style of Friedhoff. Friedhoff's building style is characterised by sustainability, solidity, dignity, without experimental applications, whereby any new techniques were subordinate to traditional architecture. A. Haytsma was commissioned to create a relief above the entrance.
The original appearance of the I.V.R.O. has been modified in some respects as the white skim coat of the brickwork has been removed, the originally off-white painted doors have been painted green and the windows have been replaced with plastic while maintaining visual value with the aid of glazing bars. In the interior the originally smooth rendered walls are finished with fibreglass, the ceilings provided with dropped ceilings. The original floor finish of linoleum has been replaced with floor covering.
Description
The INSTITUTE FOR CROP VARIETY RESEARCH (I.V.R.O.) is symmetrical in layout with a U-shaped floor plan, situated around the round pond, consisting of three building volumes connected to each other by means of two brick walls. In addition to the physical connection, the building volumes are also inextricably linked to each other through design which is expressed in the identical main form (rectangular volume closed by a hipped roof), materials applied, detailing and construction (including brick, random bond, originally white-skimmed facades, smoked ceramic roof tiles, red tile floors, wooden doors, windows).
The MAIN VOLUME with rectangular floor plan distinguishes itself from the outbuildings in height and symmetry. The main building consists of two storeys in contrast to the single-storey outbuildings. The symmetrical facade layout consists of a central entrance section emphasised by the profiled brick chimney on the roof ridge with in the front facade a double door with a brick step platform in front of it, on either side against the facade a lantern and above it an embedded natural stone relief, designed by A. Haytsma from Amsterdam. The relief depicts five figures (the grower, the farmer, the merchant, the baker and the housewife) and their relationship with the growing, cultivation, harvesting and selling and processing of the variety into an end product for the consumer. Above the entrance section three windows on the upper floor. In the rear facade the internal staircase can be recognised by fifteen identical square windows, grouped in a plane of five windows high and three wide. On either side of the entrance section there are in the front and rear facade five identical window axes consisting of two identical windows per storey. Low in the hipped roof, both front and rear, six regularly distributed, identical roof dormers closed by a gabled roof. The two window axes in the gable facades are identical to those in the front facade with between them a centrally placed double door with fanlight and brick step platform. In the fanlight a lantern identical to the lanterns against the front facade. The window layout on the upper floor of the right side facade differs with six regularly distributed multi-pane windows and a large glass area in the roof plane. This layout refers to the former function of the botanical laboratory with the associated lighting provision for the germination of seeds.
The structure in the INTERIOR is largely still present on all storeys. On the ground floor and the upper floor the structure is characterised by a red tiled central corridor with rooms on either side, randomly divided. The layout of the rooms has been modified in some respects. The panelled doors are largely still original. The passages are characterised by a profiled surround and a hardstone threshold. The corridor on the ground floor opens onto the doors in the gable facades. The entrance has been slightly modified with regard to the structure of the space whereby the symmetry has disappeared here. The staircase is unchanged, apart from additions for fire separation. An important element in the interior is the higher ceiling with lightbox of the former botanical laboratory on the upper floor at the head of the building. The roof light in the roof plane provided the light that was reflected by mirrors to the lightbox. The mirrors are no longer present. This space can also be recognised by the different windows in the gable facade. The toilet groups are located in the original position with new sanitary facilities. The attic has no valuable layout and is of interest because of the roof truss structure and the concrete support of the chimney.
Central in the facade of the LEFT OUTBUILDING are seven windows identical to those in the main building, which refer to the space behind with a segmental arch plaster ceiling, originally used as a demonstration room. Currently (2009) the space is subdivided. On either side of the window section there are identical entrance sections consisting of a double door with fanlight and brick step platform with lantern with low in the roof plane a roof dormer closed by a gabled roof. The left door is the access to the former demonstration room, the right door the access to the former germination place for potatoes. At the far left is the access to the former official residence also provided with a small brick platform, at the far right is the (blocked-up) opening of the former garage. On the left on the ridge is a brick chimney of the former official residence. The roof lantern on the ridge at the location of the germination room has disappeared.
In the INTERIOR the structure is largely still present albeit that large spaces are now further subdivided. Originally this building section housed among other things an official residence, demonstration room, germination place for potatoes, garage and workshop. Particularly in the official residence walls have been broken through and/or removed. The originally separate functions of official residence, demonstration space, germination place and garage are now internally connected to each other. Among valuable interior components worthy of mention is in particular the original structure and staircase of the official residence, the red tile floor of the demonstration room, original doors and the ceiling of the demonstration room.
The facade layout of the RIGHT OUTBUILDING is in large part identical to the left outbuilding. The structure of the INTERIOR is largely still present and has been adapted in some respects to the current use. This building section housed a cooling room, workshop and a seed store.
Valuation
INSTITUTE FOR CROP VARIETY RESEARCH (I.V.R.O.) with RELIEF as component of the complex 'Groot Nergena' executed in the period 1952-1954 is an obvious milestone in the development of architecture, urban planning, land management, building technology or space-related art in the Netherlands from the period 1940-1958:
* Because of the architectural historical values as an example from the oeuvre of M. Bolten during the collaboration with national architect Friedhoff 1946-1957
* Because of the architectural historical value as an example of traditionalist building on behalf of the national government using an archetypal main form (rectangular building volume closed by a hipped roof), craft materials (brick, ceramic smoked tiles, wood, zinc) and traditional profiling (chimney, doors)
* Because of the architectural historical value because of the symmetrical, monumental layout in a U-shape as a reference to the traditional layout of a country residence with two outbuildings (regularly distributed identical windows and roof dormers, accentuated entrance section)
* Because of the ensemble value between the 20th-century national institute and the 19th-century garden layout as a remnant of the 18th-century estate 'de Nergena'
* Because of the cultural historical value because of the innovative role that the national institute has played in the post-war business-like approach to the agricultural sector, in particular the cultivation, processing and production methods
* Because of the cultural historical value of the original use for research into agricultural crops which is expressed among other things in the floor plan / the structure (large and small spaces), the finishing (tile floors, segmental arch ceiling, ceiling with lightbox)
* Because of location in an agricultural landscape?
