Inleiding
- de cultuurhistorische waarde, want de Pinksterkerk geldt als gave en exemplarische contemporaine uitdrukking van een levensovertuiging die in de tweede helft van de twintigste eeuw een belangrijke maatschappelijke rol in ons land heeft gespeeld;
- de architectuurhistorische waarde, want in typologisch opzicht, als verdiepingskerk, vormt de Pinksterkerk een goed voorbeeld uit het latere werk van architectenbureau Nielsen en Spruit;
- het architectuurhistorisch belang, want de Pinksterkerk geldt als een essentieel toonbeeld uit de periode van de Wederopbouw (1940-1965);
- de kunsthistorische waarde want de Pinksterkerk bevat in de zuidgevel van de kerkzaal het opus magnum uit het oeuvre van ontwerper Berend Hendriks, zijnde de gaaf bewaarde en zeldzame glas-in-betonwand met een voorstelling van het Pinksterverhaal;
- de bouwhistorische waarde, want de glaswand is in ons land een zeer vroeg voorbeeld van een techniek die bekend staat als glas-in-beton, een techniek die in 1929 voor het eerst werd toegepast door Louis Mazetière;

Description
Introduction
The PENTECOST CHURCH, constructed in reinforced concrete and brickwork, dates from 1956-1957 and is a design by the architectural firm Chr. Nielsen (1910-1995) and J.H. Spruit (1910-1988); D. Versloot from Nieuwerbrug was the contractor. The building costs amounted to 400,000 guilders including furnishings and stained glass. The church is positioned eight metres behind the building line on a site of approximately 24 by 50 metres and was put into use in 1957. From a typological perspective, this is a split-level church: the church hall is situated above a basement storey. In 1992 the Pentecost Church underwent renovation under the direction of the office Piet Koster: the main entrance was relocated from the upper storey to the basement and has since served as an emergency exit; furthermore, an entrance for persons with disabilities was added, the church pews were removed and a lift was installed. Until 1992 the church furnishings were arranged across the width rather than the length of the church; the pulpit and baptismal font stood against the west wall. The original passageway to the land behind at the north side of the Pentecost Church was removed. Finally, in 1992 a low, flat-roofed extension containing the youth hall and a patio was constructed against the rear facade.
Description
The PENTECOST CHURCH has a rectangular plan and a flat roof. One long side (the south side of the rectangle) borders on the Camplaan and forms the most striking part of the monument: here above the basement storey is located the former main entrance with concrete canopy and matching external staircase with iron balustrade. Against the east side of the external staircase a rectangular planter box has been placed; the box is of concrete and has on its edge a coping course of red brickwork. On the east side a hip-height, approximately 16-metre-long wall of red brickwork forms the boundary with house number 16a; the wall is capped with a concrete edge on which two wooden beams placed parallel along the length of the wall are supported on Y-shaped iron supports. The front facade of the Pentecost Church in the upper storey is filled with both figurative and abstract glass-in-concrete designed by Berend Hendriks (1918-1997). In the passageway a remarkable stone with text is set into the masonry (in capitals): "on 3 november 1956 the first stone was laid by: Dr. P.J. Richel. V.D.M." The basement storey is divided into, among other spaces, a hall, buffet, meeting room, consistory/minister's room, three meeting rooms, kitchen and a ramp for persons with disabilities. A small extension on the north side of the Pentecost Church contains on the ground floor a cloakroom with toilets; from the hall a concrete staircase with iron handrail leads to the upper storey.
The interior of the church hall consists of brickwork with ground walls. Four vertically positioned steel H-profiles with trussed beams support the wooden ceiling which is lined with boarding. The trussed beams rest on the north wall in which, beneath the roof edge, a window strip is positioned. The glass wall on the south side of the church hall designed by Berend Hendriks depicts the Pentecost narrative; this glass wall is divided over its entire height by means of concrete pillars into 19 bays containing coloured glass-in-concrete. The varied colouring and the different thicknesses of the glass lend, depending on the time of day and the prevailing season, an engaging atmosphere to the church interior with changing moods. Against the western wall of the church hall a composite, natural stone relief of grey, finely ground natural stone on a blue-green ground has been placed; the relief depicts an angel in orant position. The Berg and Wendt organ is not included in statutory protection due to insufficient monumental value.
Valuation
The PENTECOST CHURCH, built in 1956-1957 after a design by the architectural firm Nielsen and Spruit represents a matter of general interest due to:
- its cultural-historical value, because the Pentecost Church is regarded as an intact and exemplary contemporary expression of a worldview that played an important social role in our country in the second half of the twentieth century;
- its architectural-historical value, because from a typological perspective, as a split-level church, the Pentecost Church forms a good example from the later work of the architectural firm Nielsen and Spruit;
- its architectural-historical significance, because the Pentecost Church is regarded as an essential exemplar from the period of Reconstruction (1940-1965);
- its art-historical value because the Pentecost Church contains in the south facade of the church hall the opus magnum from the oeuvre of designer Berend Hendriks, being the well-preserved and rare glass-in-concrete wall depicting the Pentecost narrative;
- its building-historical value, because the glass wall is a very early example in our country of a technique known as glass-in-concrete, a technique that was first applied in 1929 by Louis Mazetière;
- the intactness and rarity of the Pentecost Church with regard to the preserved principal form and the construction.
