Inleiding

Introduction

The H. J. LOVINK PUMPING STATION with INTAKE and DISCHARGE lies on the Harderbosweg, the extension of the Harderdijk. This road lies on the southern dike of the Flevopolder on the Veluwemeer, directly opposite the Lorentzhaven of Harderwijk.

At the time of the reclamation of Oostelijk Flevoland in 1957, the Lovink pumping station, together with the Colijn pumping station at the Ketelhaven (north of Dronten) and the Wortman pumping station at Lelystad, drained the area.

The pumping station is situated to the northeast of the Lovinksluis, which is 5 metres wide with a water level difference between inside and outside water of 5.20 metres (2002). This sluice forms the connection between the Veluwemeer and the Hoge Dwarsvaart (canal). The sluice connects via the Harderhaven into the Veluwemeer. This recreational sluice is part of the shipping route between the Veluwemeer and the Markermeer. On the polder side of the pumping station there is a fixed bridge with a clearance height of 7 metres.

The pumping station came into operation in September 1956 to pump out the Oostelijke Flevopolder. The pumping station is named after Dr. H.J. Lovink (1866-1938), the chairman of the State Commission which dealt with the agricultural and economic aspects of the reclamation.

In the canal the Hoge Dwarsvaart, the landscape artwork De Blauwe Dromer by Amsterdam artist Jacqueline Verhaagen was placed in 2001.

Description

The PUMPING STATION, built in 1956 to the design of architect Dirk Roosenburg (1887-1962), consists of a building with multiple storeys on a rectangular ground plan. The building lies partly in the dike; on the Veluwemeer side (south facade) the ground level is slightly lower. The mass consists of three rectangular blocks: the largest lying horizontally (the machine room), the smallest on top of it, and the third standing vertically with the stairwell (with open side walls filled with steel frames and glass). On the largest building block there is a terrace enclosed by the concrete structure which projects above the building, and a wide concrete chimney. The concrete structure of the building has been left exposed and forms the framework of window arrangements and the rectangular intermediate spaces of yellow brickwork. The facade facing the canal (northwest side) has six tall windows over the entire height. The facade facing the Veluwemeer has six small windows distributed over two storeys. Deviating from the framework, a wide window has been placed in the middle filled with a slightly projecting frame. All windows are filled with steel frames.

On the end facade on the south side, the entrance has been placed projecting slightly forward and filled with a steel frame and door. Above the entrance is a panel with a work of art. This work of art is by the artist J.M. Roozenburg from Eijsden, and bears the name Land and Water. It consists of a ceramic two-colour relief and depicts a farmer and a fisherman shaking hands across the dike. The panel consists of terracotta tiles approximately 40 x 40 cm in size. The figures are glazed green/white on a brown background. The end facade on the north side is blank. Only the combination of the concrete structure with the yellow brickwork gives this facade any plasticity.

In the large open machine room, the concrete truss structure has been left exposed. The electric pumping station pumps with two pumps the high section of the Oostelijke and Westelijke Flevopolder (in which the canal De Hoge Vaart lies). In a separate section of the machine hall stands a distribution battery for the transformer, an auxiliary generator (diesel engine). The pump installation consists of two vertical centrifugal pumps and two vertical three-phase motors.

On the Veluwemeer and on the canal De Hoge Dwarsvaart there are the concrete INTAKE and DISCHARGE.

Valuation

The LOVINK PUMPING STATION with INTAKE and DISCHARGE is of general importance:

On account of cultural-historical values, as a milestone of the post-war reclamation of the southern Flevopolder. The pumping station, together with the other pumping stations in the Flevopolder, forms part of a larger whole within pumping station construction with above-average architecture and is therefore of great cultural-historical significance. The pumping station is an exemplar of Reconstruction in the formation of new land on the seabed.

On account of architectural-historical values, as an example of modernist design, and the particular application of the concrete structure with a filling of brickwork and glass. The building occupies an important position in the oeuvre of hydraulic engineering works by the Roosenburg Office.

On account of the monumental art. A ceramic relief has been placed on the end facade depicting a fisherman and a farmer shaking hands. This refers to the particular significance of the pumping station for Flevoland: the new (farming) land on the seabed.

On account of ensemble values, the pumping station forms part of the drainage system that drained the Oostelijke Flevopolder in 1957.

On account of the integrity of the building and the pump installation.
