Inleiding

Introduction

The HOLY MOTHER ANNA CHURCH was built in 1952-1953 according to a design by architects F.P.J. Peutz (1896-1974) and H. Teeken (1900-1950). The church is centrally located in the Bekkerveld neighbourhood, situated at the edge (in the southwestern corner) of a substantial green space, the Bekkerveld. The lawn on the north and east sides of the church is bordered by a double row of chestnut trees. The small square on the west and south sides of the church is paved. The open situation in the green space enhances the monumental appearance of the church and of the green space.

The Holy Mother Anna parish was officially established on 21 November 1941. The architects were already appointed in 1939 to design a new church. Because of the Second World War, the construction of a new church, which was to become the new main church of the eastern mining region with approximately 1000 seats, was postponed. In 1949 the architects resumed work. In 1950 H. Teeken died unexpectedly and F.P.J. Peutz continued the work alone. On 21 March 1952 the first concrete was poured, on 27 April 1952 Dean Bemelmans laid the 'first stone' and on 25 July 1953 the Holy Mother Anna Church was put into service. Consecration followed on 12 July 1959 by Mgr. Moors. The work was carried out by the firm Gebr. Van Heeswijk from Best.

The Holy Mother Anna Church is a dome church oriented to the east on a square ground plan. The church is entirely executed in reinforced concrete, a material which until then was considered by the Roman Catholic church as unsuitable and unworthy for church construction. The rough concrete was left exposed as it came from the formwork.

Architect Peutz was one of the important Catholic architects of the Netherlands. Peutz's ecclesiastical work is often based on traditional typologies and executed with traditional and regional materials. The ground plan and structure of the Anna Church (central building, square with dome) can therefore be related to Byzantine and early Christian church construction. The designs that Peutz made for the altars, confessionals and baptismal font, as well as the material use (wood, natural stone) for these components are likewise traditional. The innovative aspect of the design for the Holy Mother Anna Church lies in the material use. In this respect, the Holy Mother Anna Church is unique in Limburgian church construction and the church occupies a unique position within architect Peutz's ecclesiastical oeuvre because of this material use. Furthermore, Peutz designed the Holy Mother Anna Church as a Gesamtkunstwerk.

Daan Wildschut (1913-1995), who introduced glass-in-concrete to the Netherlands in 1949 at an exhibition of Scheppend Ambacht in Maastricht, designed seventeen glass-in-concrete windows in the period 1954-1979. The last of these windows, all of which were manufactured by atelier Flos from Tegelen, are no longer executed in concrete but in artificial resin (epoxy). Other artists who contributed to the church were J. Biessen (tabernacle, 1974), Jos Teeken (1959, glass-in-lead windows sacristy), F.P.J. Peutz (altar table, baptismal font, two confessionals), Nic. Tummers (one bronze figure in memorial chapel; this figure was a trial arrangement for a not completed full Stations of the Cross) and F. Hawinkels (1998, Stations of the Cross, altar in daily chapel). Against the east wall are two sandstone side altars with 17th-century walnut figures of Anna and Joachim and a figure of Mary with Child. In the northwestern corner stands a sandstone Mary altar. In 1959 Verschueren Orgelbouw (Heythuysen) placed a three-manual organ with 33 stops. The organ has no monumental value.

Between 1957 and 1963 the choir and church floor were provided with Namur stone. In 1975-1977 the church was thoroughly renovated. At this time the choir was rearranged, the sacrament altar was adapted and the space of the southern side altar was converted into a daily chapel. The baptismal chapel was converted into a sacristy and the former sacristy was converted into a meeting room. The benches from the children's chapel were removed; the wooden platforms were replaced by Namur stone. In 1989, copper plates were laid on the roof in accordance with the original design. The lantern was also clad with copper at that time. The exterior of the church has at some point been painted grey. Most of the windows in the octagon have external storm frames.

Description

Exterior: The HOLY MOTHER ANNA CHURCH is a dome church with a single-storey base on a square ground plan (40 X 40 metres). This central building has at the west side a higher-built-up, extended portal and at the east side a single-storey extended former sacristy and former baptismal chapel. Centrally on the square base is placed an octagonal drum with a gently curved dome vault. The copper-covered dome, a concrete shell structure, has a diameter of 31 metres. The octagon is articulated by corner pilasters and an arched articulation at the top of each facade surface. In the recessed facade surfaces is a tall, arched window placed with concrete round-arch tracery. On either side of each window is a vertical decorative band applied. At the top the spandrel is terminated with a decorative band. On the dome stands a lead-clad lantern with dome on which an iron cross is placed. The lantern has narrow tall round-arch windows. The single-storey base around the octagon has flat roofs. The facades are articulated by pilasters and at the top closed off with a decorative cornice. Against a number of pilasters are substantial zinc gutters attached. On all corners of the base is, low in the spandrels, a tall window placed with a concrete glazing pattern of twelve squares (3x4). The high extended portal on the west side has an arched canopy that rests on side walls and on two slender columns. In the front facade are three double doors placed which are furnished with copper fittings and each have six round windows. The doors provide access to the vestibule of the church. In both side facades of the portal at the height of the gallery is a right-angled window placed with concrete tracery. Against the south side of the portal is a round stair tower placed with buttresses and with a flat roof. The single-storey extension on the east side (the former sacristy and baptismal chapel) has a flat roof. In two steel double doors (north and south facade) are glass-in-lead windows placed. The extension has several horizontal three-part steel windows and in the east facade a door.

Interior: From the vestibule three double wooden doors provide access to the church. The high central space has a gently curved dome vault. The octagonal drum rests on eight columns which are placed in a circular arrangement in the square space. Eight wide, arched webs separate the central space from the ambulatory. The ambulatory has lightly arched coverings. Above the windows in the drum lies a heavy concrete ring beam. Above this the dome vault is built up on the interior from concentrically cut rings. As the dome vault closes, light enters through the lantern. On the west side at the height of the drum is a gallery which has a concrete balustrade with round openings. In the side facades of the gallery are windows with glass-in-concrete placed (Lamb of God and Paradise). The choir (east side) is raised and is surrounded on three sides by a sandstone communion rail (1957). Centrally in the choir stands the sandstone altar table which rests on scroll-shaped 'feet'. Behind the altar table stands in a niche of the curved rear wall of the choir the green marble sacrament altar (1958, executed by firm Laudy) with the tabernacle on it. Behind the curved wall is, in the single-storey extension on the east side, the sacristy. The floors are laid with Namur stone. The original wooden benches are arranged axially in six rows. Against the north and south facade is a wooden confessional placed. Under the gallery stand two sandstone holy water vessels. In the present baptismal chapel, in the northeastern corner of the church, stands the baptismal font on a sandstone, round foot with a pyramid-shaped lid which is manufactured from a copper alloy (brass, copper). In the west wall is the first stone set with the text LAPIS ANGULARIS POSITUS EST PRIMUS LAPISAN NO DI MCMLII MENSE APRILIS. In the double steel doors in the north and south facade of the former baptismal chapel (now sacristy) are glass-in-lead windows (1959) placed according to a design by parishioner Jos. Teeken. Here are depicted: Baptism in the Jordan, Descent from the Cross, Entombment, Resurrection and the Washing of Feet. The glass-in-concrete windows in the facades of the square base depict scenes from the New Testament: Wedding at Cana (1978), Raising of the young man of Nain, Mary with child in angelic glory (1954), Anna window, Anna with scroll plus scenes from the life of Anna and Joachim (1955). The two windows in the west facade are dedicated to the Song of Songs (1978) and to humanity itself. This so-called Faces window (1978) contains twelve portraits of people who have committed themselves to a better world. The glass-in-concrete windows in the octagon depict scenes from the life of Christ.

Valuation

The HOLY MOTHER ANNA CHURCH is of general importance because of its cultural-historical value as a particular expression of the development of Catholic life in southern Netherlands and because of the innovative value of the church as an example of a Catholic church where rough concrete has been left exposed. The church is of architectural-historical value as a Gesamtkunstwerk and because of its particular significance for the renewal of ecclesiastical architecture and for the oeuvre of architect F.P.J. Peutz and artist D. Wildschut. The church is furthermore of architectural-historical value because of the aesthetic quality of the design, because of the particular material use and because of the glass-in-concrete windows. The church derives situational value from its spacious and open situation at the edge of the green space; the church is image-defining for the appearance of the Bekkerveld. The church is of general importance because of the relative rarity of the material use whereby rough concrete has been left exposed and the architectural, material and constructive integrity.
