Omschrijving
Omschrijving onderdeel 1:
- vanwege de ouderdom;
- vanwege de architectonische vormgeving in neoclassicistische stijl uit 1870;
- vanwege de gaaf bewaarde eenheid van het ex- en interieur;
- vanwege de beeldbepalende ligging in de tuin- en parkaanleg;

Description
Description of component 1:
MAIN BUILDING (Vanenburg) part of the historic country estate Vanenburg. On an older building site, a white-rendered house was built around the middle of the 19th century in eclectic style with the entrance on the side of the house. This villa-like building shows similarities with a number of The Hague houses from 1860 by architect Saraber. Characteristic of the architecture is the entrance, which is situated on the side of the house; the corridor structure that runs the length of the house; and the strictly maintained symmetry. The house was designed to be covered by greenery. The house, erected on a rectangular plan with stone plinth, consists of a basement, bel-étage and first floor under a flat roof, now covered with mastic, originally with zinc slates, with hipped roof. On the roof stand two chimneys crowned with chimney pots bearing gilded weathervanes. The facades have stuccoed corner pilasters partly in block work and with recessed panels and are terminated above the cornice by a balustrade with cast iron urns on the two front corners. The facades are articulated horizontally by wooden drip mouldings and are divided by T-windows (partly still provided with original drawn glass). The symmetrical front facade (east) is the most representative facade furnished with a three-sided central risalit - cupola chamber -, which projects with a mezzanine above the first floor. In 1924, a coat of arms stone from 1665 with the alliance coat of arms of Van Essen - Van Varick was set in the mezzanine and also the tympanum was placed. The facade has a horizontal articulation determined by a veranda, balcony and canopy extending across the full width of the house. The veranda is at the height of the bel-étage with cast iron balustrade standing on a mortared base with natural stone plinth and drip moulding; accessible via a nine-step staircase on the south side. On the veranda stand decorated cast iron columns carrying the first floor balcony; cast iron columns also stand on the balcony which in turn carry the canopy. The balcony is furnished with a cast iron balustrade, the canopy with a decorative scalloped cornice. The facade openings with double doors are framed in a stucco surround. The main entrance is situated in the centre of the north facade in a single-storey vestibule projecting approximately 5 metres. The cemented vestibule is furnished with horizontal false joints (natural stone imitation). In front of the vestibule stands a wooden draught porch with diamond-shaped glazing bars. On either side of this is a non-original extension with one window section. The flat roof of the extension is used as a balcony with cast iron balustrade, identical to the balustrade of the first floor of the east facade. On the first floor three window sections with T-shaped articulation, the central (glazing bar) window has a cornice carried by two consoles; at the location of the central risalit a mezzanine. Against the south facade is the conservatory (originally winter garden) on a rectangular plan with chamfered corners. The window arrangement was altered in 1986. The flat roof of the conservatory is used as a balcony with cast iron balustrade, identical to the balustrade of the first floor of the east facade. On the first floor three window sections. The flat rear facade (west) formerly had five window sections, now a window has been added at the far left on the bel-étage. Covered access to the kitchen. The outdoor staircase on the right in the facade and in the conservatory are of a later date (balustrade 1986). In the INTERIOR, of particular importance are the well-preserved symmetry and axial arrangement of the floor plan and its decoration; the marble vestibule with double draught door furnished with etched glass and the corridor running the length of the house with many (false) doors; the room on the south side with wainscoting, stucco ceiling with decorative bands and putti from the period of construction (1870) and a richly decorated 18th-century (second half of the 18th century) fireplace surround with woodcarving in Louis XIV style, the design of which is inspired by Daniel Marot; the room on the south-west side with wainscoting and 19th-century white marble fireplace in neo-Louis XIV style with a mirror frame with decorative crest in neo-Rococo style. The main staircase originally led to the first floor and was extended in 1961. The basement dates in its main layout from the period of construction. Roof truss structure with collar ties.
Valuation MAIN BUILDING (Vanenburg) of general importance:
- on account of its age;
- on account of its architectural design in neoclassical style from 1870;
- on account of the well-preserved unity of the exterior and interior;
- on account of its visually defining position in the garden and park layout;
- on account of the functional-spatial relationship with the other components of the country estate.
