Omschrijving
Omschrijving onderdeel 2: HISTORISCHE PARK- EN TUINAANLEG.
- als vrijwel gaaf en daardoor zeldzaam geworden voorbeeld van een tuinaanleg bij een buitenplaats uit het oeuvre van de tuinarchitect L.A. Springer;
- wegens de esthetische kwaliteiten van de samenstellende onderdelen van het ontwerp van L.A. Springer uit 1917-1919 met name wegens de zorgvuldige inpassing van het 18de-eeuwse lanenpatroon;

Description
Description component 2: HISTORICAL PARK AND GARDEN LAYOUT.
The HISTORICAL PARK AND GARDEN LAYOUT consists of open meadows and wooded areas with avenues and a geometric garden to the north of the house. The garden is almost entirely laid out in accordance with the design by L.A. Springer of 31 January 1917, with as deviations the area around the house which closely corresponds with Springer's design of 5 December 1919 and the arable land to the west of the house which is now meadow. This meadow is intersected by a tree belt and a winding beech avenue, which was already planted in the early twentieth century.
The basis of the layout is formed by an orthogonal avenue pattern which remains from the geometric layout of the 18th century and which is shown on the Hottinger map of 1783. Along almost the entire length of the garden, beginning at the western point at the public road and ending at the eastern boundary, runs the principal avenue. This is uninterrupted and goes, planted with four rows of beeches, straight up the hill. In the western part of the garden to the north of this avenue there is still a triangular wooded plot (oak and beech) with winding paths, in the eastern part the beech avenue forms the northern boundary of the garden.
To the south of the beech avenue runs parallel to it in the eastern part of the garden a second avenue. This runs as a broad gravel path along the front door of the house. East of the house the avenue forms the symmetry axis marked by rhododendron shrubs of a wooded parkland plot, west of the house it changes into a tree belt. At that point a drive with a curve (which accentuates the change in level) runs in a southern direction along the coach house to the public road. Perpendicular to these two parallel avenues there are beech avenues also located on either side of the house. The one on the east side forms the main access to the grounds from the public road and is the western boundary of the wooded parkland plot in the north-east of the garden and of the meadow (with a group of trees in the south-eastern corner) to the south of it. The access is closed at the public road by an iron gate between masonry pillars. The beech avenue to the west of the house does not continue to the public road but turns off in a western direction towards the coach house and joins there to the path system through meadow and wooded plots. The eastern boundary of the garden is also formed by a north-south running avenue with a row of trees which remains from the orthogonal layout.
In the quadrant which is to the north of the house enclosed by the system of avenues lies a geometrically laid-out garden section. This is built around a cross axis of which one axis (N-S) connects to the front door of the house. In the axes lies a path surfaced with rectangular flagstones. At the intersection of the axes lies (in deviation from Springer's design) a cruciform basin, around which a surfacing of flagstones in the form of a square. Around the basin were originally symmetrical parterres with flower beds and shrubs which are now largely replaced by lawn. At the beginning and end of the north-south oriented axis stands on either side a shaped yew.
To the north-east of the geometric section lies on the boundary of the grounds an artificial mound covered with fragments of natural stone over which paths run. On and around this mound stand shrubs and trees.
Around the house runs on three sides a narrow gravel surfacing. On the north side of the house runs the broad gravel path which connects to the southern of the two east-west axes. In the main axis of the house the gravel path is widened in the form of an exedra. The path is bordered on both sides by a yew hedge approximately 1.5 metres in height which at the ends and at the junctions of paths is provided with cone shapes clipped into the hedge. Between path and hedge lies a narrow lawn, originally with oblong flower beds and low shrubs. Opposite the front door a gate is clipped in the hedge, marked at the top with two spherical forms. To the north of this hedge lies the geometric garden with in connection to it on the west side the former tennis court.
To the south of the house lies between the two north-south running avenues an open grassy field with approximately in the centre a pond in the form of a crescent moon. On either side of it stands a solitary tree. On the west side of the meadow stands a landscape planting with groups of trees, solitary trees and shrubs. To the west near the house is a lawn with a solitary tree. To the east stands a planting group consisting of trees and shrubs.
The section of the garden layout in the south-west, between the long beech avenue, the public road and the beech avenue to the west of the house, is a meadow with winding avenues and a piece of tall timber.
The beech avenue from house to coach house changes at the coach house into a path which runs along a steep slope to the west to the site of the former kitchen garden.
In the western point of the garden stands tall timber, consisting of oak and beech.
Valuation
The HISTORICAL PARK AND GARDEN LAYOUT, belonging to the historical country estate De Hulst is of general cultural-historical and garden-historical importance:
- as an almost intact and therefore rare example of a garden layout at a country estate from the oeuvre of the garden architect L.A. Springer;
- owing to the aesthetic qualities of the constituent elements of L.A. Springer's design of 1917-1919 in particular owing to the careful integration of the 18th-century avenue pattern;
- owing to the integrity of the original design, namely the path and avenue pattern and the wooded structure.
- owing to the coherence between the layout and the country house.
