Description
Description of component 2
Historical garden and park layout
The ground plan of Hottinger from 1783 provides the earliest information about the surroundings of De Poll. Outside the dike, that is to say outside the IJsseldijk which served as a winter dike, the house stands on an island in a substantial body of water, the remnant of an old breach of the river. On the similarly moated forecourt lie two service buildings and a small, formally laid out garden. The body of water is closed off on the south side with a segmental arch. From the long drive, two straight lanes planted with trees run in a north-westerly direction. The most northern of the two offers a view of the farmhouse de Bremte (see component 12 for this). Along both transverse lanes there is a formal layout with a straight and mutually crossing lane pattern. Over the entire length of the IJsseldijk from the Nijenbeekseweg to the house, on the west side there is a wood intersected with paths. The east side of the dike is subdivided with building and pasture land. The greatest changes took place around 1800, when Willem Anne Schimmelpenninck van der Oye was Lord of the two Pollen. At his death in 1816, the country estate had largely acquired the form it still possesses. The new phase of the country estate is depicted on the map of M.J. de Man from 1805. In twenty years a remarkable transformation took place. The part to the north-west of the house which in 1783 still had a formal layout has now been changed into a layout in which meandering bodies of water and paths dominate. In any case, the formal gardens to the west of the house and the wooded parcels along the east side of the dike are still present. The cadastral map of 1827 confirms the data from De Man's map. The landscape layout has, however, been adapted. The house with forecourt and 'pleasure garden' is now situated on a substantial, irregularly shaped island. In the large body of water lies a small island, which on the OAT is also called 'Eiland'. The drive has been extended across the IJsseldijk and runs via a bridge straight up to the house site. On the east side of the IJsseldijk, at the level of the house, a patch of woodland has been planted, which merges into the landscape park. In the landscape park itself which is called 'Plattenberg', lies a 'Cossack hut' (see component 29 for this). Compared with the situation in 1805, the alternation in the park of bodies of water, walks and islands with tall trees and coppice has been made more pronounced. Here the hand of landscape architect Hendrik van Lunteren can be recognised, who made alterations to the park in 1812. The circular walk around the country estate of Schimmelpenninck van der Oye in the early 19th century offered an alternation of views. On the cadastral map and De Man's map it can be seen how a number of farmhouses played a role in the perception of the country estate landscape. Already mentioned is de Bremte at the end of one of the transverse lanes. De Oude Poll (see component 9 for this) and de Zutphenboer (see component 10 for this) are incorporated as visual elements in the walk from the House and the landscape park. Coming from the house via the drive, on the north side lies the Hof te Gietel with outbuildings (see component 14 for this) and on the south side the buildings of the farmhouse Praesink (Preseng) (see component 22 for this) and de Belle Rensink (see component 24 for this). Somewhat further to the west, but still perceivable as an element, is the Stakenberg situated (see component 17 for this). At the end of the drive lies the Gietselsche Brouwerij with its outbuildings (see component 19 for this). On the site of the present porter's lodge (see component 20 for this) two small buildings are depicted. The Topographical Military Map of 1844 shows a next phase: the water on the west side of the house island has been filled in and the drive is now redirected with a bend, so that it approaches the house from the south side. South of the redirected drive is the vegetable garden with various buildings and walls appeared. Van der Aa writes in 1847: '... It is one of the most considerable estates in the district, intersected by delightful features and graced with elegant tree-planting, it contains a house refurbished in modern taste'. The main motif in the layout of De Poll is the meandering dike, planted with trees and shrubs, over which the walk through the country estate leads and which offers views of the surroundings. In the section of the country estate the profile of the dike was deliberately excavated, so that a desired variation in height and width was obtained. This variation is directly related to the composition of the other part of the country estate. At the location of the body of water to the north-west of the house, the dike is higher than elsewhere. In this capacity, the dike, which as a naturally appearing coulisse encloses the eastern body of water in a bowl shape, increases the contrast between the relatively deep lying water and the high position of the walking path on the dike. This motif, which lends a dramatic effect to the walk in the park, is characteristic of the mature landscape style from the first half of the 19th century. At the level of the Polllaan the dike is lower and of very gentle profile, so that the house is visible from the drive. This would not have been possible if the dike had the average height. This situation has not changed to this day. The landscape park to the west and north of the house, the IJsseldijk with the wooded areas intersected with walks, the access lanes with views over the arable land to various farmhouses: a human-created arcadian landscape making use of existing elements in the landscape such as the old IJsseldijk and in which various farmhouses, by means of a circular walk, play a role as viewpoint and as 'ferme ornée', a decorative element that one becomes aware of whilst walking and which is characteristic of the mature landscape style in the 19th century.
During the Second World War, most of the woods of De Poll were felled, but replanting was subsequently undertaken vigorously, so that the house is again situated in a beautiful park landscape.
The following components are of historical importance:
- The house on the irregularly shaped house site, surrounded on three sides by a body of water. The water on the west side was filled in before 1844
- The landscape park to the west and north of the house, making use of the natural situation on site: the remnants of an old IJssel arm
- The mid-19th-century vegetable garden complex with outbuildings to the south of the house and orchard annex
- The meandering IJsseldijk or Bandijk with the wooded areas on the west side, intersected with walks, which is incorporated as a 'natural' element in the composition of the country estate
- The access lanes planted with avenue trees and the circular walks with views over the arable land to various farmhouses, which thereby function as 'fermes ornées'.
- The open spaces between the lanes as a structurally defining element in the interplay of open and closed, of alternation characteristic of the experience of a 19th-century landscape park
