Omschrijving
Omschrijving onderdeel 2:
Waardering
HISTORISCHE TUIN- EN PARKAANLEG van Slot Zeist is in cultuurhistorisch opzicht van algemeen belang: Als representatief voorbeeld van een in structuur bewaard gebleven zeventiende-eeuwse formele aanleg;
- Vanwege de kwaliteit van de karakteristieke latere wijziging in landschapsstijl, waarin een aantal zeventiende-eeuwse formele elementen gehandhaafd is;
- Vanwege de plaats van de aanleg in de ontwikkeling van de Nederlandse hofkunst, en de invloed op de tuinen van het Loo en Voorst;

Description
Description component 2:
The HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country estate Slot Zeist, laid out between 1677-1686 is in its main features the formal French layout, originally consisting of decorative pleasure gardens, utility gardens and star woods symmetrically laid out along a central main axis, recognisable in broader context within the urban planning layout of Zeist, in smaller context within the boundaries of the present protected country estate. The layout is greatly determined by the existing land division on the site; the Koelaan clearly follows the original land division structure. The seventeenth-century main structure consists of the long tree-planted central main avenues which are also sight lines, the straight avenues bordering the country estate on both sides (Waterigeweg and Karpervijver/Filosofenlaantje), cross avenues and the ditches around the house and the former pleasure gardens. The main avenue is now tree-planted and flanked on both sides with broad grass verges. The entrance at the level of the Lageweg is formed by a monumental gateway which originally stood at the Rond. In front of the house a cross axis, the later Zinzendorflaan, with an open forecourt that provides access via a bridge to the house. The building complexes at Broeder- and Zusterplein follow the form of the originally open meadows on either side of the central axis, the graveyard of the Brethren Community situated behind the Zusterplein is located on a former pleasure garden (De Nieuwe Kom or Orangery Park). Of De Nieuwe Kom and the utility garden on either side of the main axis, two restored garden walls remain. Behind the main building the middle section is closed off by a semicircle, flanked by two rectangular side sections (compare Loo and Voorst). This formal structure is still recognisable in its main form in the landscape layout by Zocher.
In the seventeenth century, on the site directly behind the mirror bow (or semicircle) there were two 'bogaarden' (melon beds) and melon gardens. Beyond that came the star woods which extended to the Blikkenburgerlaan. This became known as the Achterbosch. What Zocher did was the following. The section to the right behind the pond bow, originally the vegetable garden, he partly planned as an open space or garden. Beyond that, at the location of the old star wood, he designed a section planted with small woods and clumps with long curved paths extending to the Blikkenburgerweg, the old cross avenue that Stoopendaal had also drawn. According to the topographical map of 1872 this was indeed executed. What was also executed was the removal of part of the Koelaan to the Blikkenburgerlaan (not until the late 1930s was it reinstated) in order not to disturb the curved lines of paths and planting and the vista toward Blikkenburg and Wulperhorst. Only a break in the rigid line of the Blikkenburgerweg which Zocher had designed was not executed. The former vegetable gardens and star woods, after being part of Zocher's landscape layout, were rearranged partly as sports fields and partly as allotment gardens.
Of the garden ornaments that originally furnished the layout, there now remains a group of statues with allegorical figures of the continents Europe and Africa, marking the outlet of the water source in the moat pond on the south side, and one of the tea pavilions that accentuated both corners of the garden behind the house at the house moat. Additionally, two garden urns have been preserved. In fact, Zocher kept his interventions limited. The mirror bow-shaped pond he rounded off, as it were; he dug out a corner of the garden so that an islet was created and through the refined placement of tree groups and the laying out of curved paths, he created the illusion that the entire park was completely transformed. The (topographical) maps of 1700, 1800, 1831, 1872 and 1927 show how skilfully he achieved the illusion of endless vistas with the smallest interventions. Characteristic of this layout are the tree groups, between which an oblique sight line from the house toward the more distant country estates Blikkenburg and Wulperhorst has been created. The layout further contains several solitary trees and an islet planted with trees in the pond. The seventeenth-century sight lines were partly undone by the later modification in landscape style.
Valuation
HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT of Slot Zeist is of general cultural-historical importance: As a representative example of a seventeenth-century formal layout preserved in structure;
- On account of the quality of the characteristic later modification in landscape style, in which a number of seventeenth-century formal elements have been retained;
- On account of the place of the layout in the development of Dutch garden art, and the influence on the gardens of Het Loo and Voorst;
- On account of its place in the oeuvre of J.D. Zocher jr.
- On account of its significance for the spatial development of the village of Zeist.
