Omschrijving

Waardering

Description

MAIN BUILDING (Slot Zeist) completed in 1686, consisting of a central main building which by means of single-storey, flat-roofed connecting wings joins the cross-placed two-storey building houses completed in 1682 on either side of a rectangular forecourt with a paving pattern laid in the years 1960-1969, closed off by a richly decorated fencing reconstructed between 1960-1969. A stone arch bridge over the castle moat leads to the forecourt. The entrances in the front and rear facades are provided with stairs. The main building has a front facade of seven bays, with a high basement, two storeys and a mezzanine under a hipped roof covered with slate in Rhine covering. The front facade has a five-axis projecting central feature, with a recessed axis on either side. The decoration is limited to the entrance part with date 1686 which together with the window above is set in a sandstone frame, provided with two Ionic pilasters on either side, a main entablature with urns and flower garlands around the first-floor window. The central axis is emphasized by the slightly projecting cornice on decorative consoles and crowned by an attic in the centre of the front roof slope with a clock face. Pilasters on the corners. The main building and the connecting wings have sash windows restored at the restoration of 1960-69, the building houses are provided with cross windows. The rear facade has a broad central feature in which a doorway with semicircular fanlight in a frame is centrally placed, closed off with a balustrade and a dentilled cornice. Double pilasters on either side and recessed sections. The building houses are covered with cut-off hipped roofs and are two storeys high, have two windows each on the short front sides, and long facades facing the forecourt with central feature, provided with cross windows with shutters on the ground floor and coupled windows on the first floor. In the INTERIOR a large entrance hall across the full depth of the house with a doorway opening onto the garden. The hall was modernized in Empire forms after 1830 by Huydecoper. This is one of the few rooms not 'restored back' to the seventeenth century at the restoration in the sixties. To the left of the hall lies the Great Hall, the Willem's Hall, named after the king-stadhouder Willem III, whose bust graces above the fireplace. This room is very richly decorated with fluted Corinthian pilasters with scrollwork, carved panelling and a coved ceiling of which the cornice is decorated with putti. At the aforementioned restoration the ceiling painting was repainted and four grisailles by Gerard de Lairesse were installed. The last hall on the left was created in its present form and dimensions at the restoration in the sixties. The Régence panelling comes from the House on the Stammersburg in Utrecht. To the right of the hall the monumental stairwell with illusionistic oil paintings over two storeys after a design by Daniel Marot, in which the symbolism of water. Staircase with three flights, a landing and wrought-iron stair rail. The room behind the stairwell, the Garden Room, has paintings also after a design by Daniel Marot. The middle room in the right part of the corps de logis has wall decoration with illusionistic architecture such as balustrades, niches and garden urns. These paintings were found again at the restoration and originally date from the time of construction of Slot Zeist. The small cabinet between the right wing of the corps de logis and the side wing has a dome-shaped stuccoed ceiling from the time of Huydecoper. Soberly decorated rooms on the first floor. Cellar with kitchen and with remains of a shell grotto, attributed to Daniel Marot.
