Inleiding

Betonnen, circa 552,15 m lange VERKEERSTUNNEL. In 1939 liet men het eerste tunnelstuk zinken.

Complex Component 5

Introduction

Concrete traffic tunnel approximately 552.15 m long. The finishing and connection to the ventilation buildings of the tunnel sections sunk in rough construction took place underwater and underground. Here the end bulkheads reinforced with crosses were removed and the four tunnel walls of the motor vehicle tunnels and the bicycle and pedestrian tunnel respectively were continued through. Subsequently the ventilation ducts, the roadway surfaces, the partition between bicycle and pedestrian tunnel, the inspection walkways, the tiling and the electrical installation were installed. In 1939 the first tunnel section was sunk. By early 1940 the construction had progressed so far that both riverbanks could be reached via the tunnel.

N.B. The original brick paving was replaced by asphalt over the course of the years.

Description

The concrete traffic tunnel contains two tubes for motor vehicle traffic, a bicycle tunnel tube and a pedestrian tunnel tube in the Nieuwe Maas. On either side of the tunnel underwater there is an open 'land tunnel' of reinforced concrete intended only for motor vehicle traffic (the traverse; see component 6). The river section of the tunnel was constructed using the so-called sinking and trench method in a dredged channel in the riverbed. The tunnel is composed of nine tunnel sections 61.35 m long, 25 m wide and 9 m high. The box-shaped segments of reinforced concrete are lined with 6 mm thick steel bottom and side wall plates and manufactured in the municipal building dock at the Heijsehaven. The motor vehicle tunnels, a western one for traffic from the north bank and an eastern one for traffic from the south bank, are both internally 6 m wide with a height of 4.20 m. The side walls are bevelled at two-thirds height at the top and completely tiled with elongated white tiles (12.5 x 25 cm), specially manufactured by N.V. de Sphinx, Petrus Regout & Co in Maastricht. The ceilings are treated with a white 'cement paste'. On either side of the partition between both tunnel tubes there is a raised inspection walkway with a simple iron balustrade. At the level of the ventilation buildings there are iron doors which provide access to the stairwell of the ventilation building and serve as an emergency exit. The motor vehicle tunnel contains a system of transverse ventilation: in the lower part of the tube, just below the floor, fresh air is supplied via delivery ducts and at the top through openings at the beginning and end of the tunnel, the contaminated air is extracted and conveyed via suction ducts to the outside. Ventilation takes place in eight separate sections, each section has two supply and suction ventilators. The speed of the motors is determined by the CO2 content, indicated by CO2 meters distributed throughout the tunnel. The total of 32 ventilators are installed in the two ventilation buildings. The tunnel is illuminated by approximately one thousand sodium lamps, originally recessed in the bevelled parts of the tunnel walls and in the ceiling. The division of both tunnel directions is confirmed at the tunnel mouths by a projecting granite wall with an elegant flight of steps on either side to the inspection walkways. Above this are shell-shaped concrete vaults. Directly east of the motor vehicle tunnel are the bicycle and pedestrian tunnel tubes positioned one above the other, which are connected via escalators to the access buildings. The bicycle tunnel is internally 4.95 m wide and divided into two lanes. In the portal of the bicycle tunnel a bronze relief is mounted on the west wall in commemoration of Burgomaster mr. Pieter Droogleever Fortuyn (1868-1938), who at that time gave the start signal for the construction of the tunnel. The slightly narrower pedestrian tunnel (4.37 m) is situated below the bicycle tunnel and is accessible via a round concrete stair with copper handrail. The walls of the bicycle and pedestrian tunnel, bevelled from halfway up, are tiled in accordance with the motor vehicle tunnel. Lighting here is provided by yellow sodium lamps, recessed in the bevelled parts of the tunnel wall. At the beginning of both tunnel entrances hangs a light box with the text in simple black letters: "DISMOUNT HERE".

Valuation

The Maastunnel, the first underwater tunnel for motor vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic in the Netherlands, of general importance because of its great cultural and architectural historical value, as well as because of its innovative urban planning and building technical value. Within the oeuvre of architect Van der Steur the Maastunnel moreover occupies an important position.
