HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT. The well-preserved 17th-century structure of the country estate is determined by the moat system and lane network, which are already clearly indicated on Lips' map from 1621. The house stands in a spacious rectangular pond with to the south an outbuilding forecourt, of which the western moat was filled in the 19th century, and to the east a moated square forecourt with bastion-shaped bulges at the corners. On three sides of the moated castle grounds lie, at some distance, the outer moat with tree-lined avenues (lane planting); the intervening pastures are now filled with a 'water garden' and greenhouses (north), a garden layout 'German garden' (east) and a building complex (south). On the south side lies a double avenue where the vegetable garden/orchard was situated (now pasture). In front of the house runs a north-south directed avenue (Bouvignelaan) and perpendicular to the house stands a vista avenue (Bouvignedreef, laid out 1611-1614), which opens into the Mastbosch forest. In the extension of this latter avenue lies in front of the gateway building a short carriage drive with chestnut trees. Around 1913 the so-called French garden was laid out opposite the neerhuis on the forecourt by the then owner Mr. L. de Bruyn, who is said to have been inspired by the French garden architect André le Nôtre.
