Inleiding

Introduction

The address Koningsweg 17b(10) now comprises, among other things, a former locomotive shed dating from the occupation period, and at some distance from it a building that at that time served as a heated aircraft hangar. The locomotive shed stands approximately 250 m north of the former runway, roughly in line with the Kemperbergerweg; the hangar stands to the southeast of this, south of the former runway in the vicinity of the northern boundary of the military camp Koningsweg-Noord. After the war the locomotive shed was converted by the Nederlandse Heidemaatschappij in conjunction with several other buildings into four farm enterprises (called the Vier Heemskinderen and as such also provided with a blue tile) - a function in which they are still used. The hangar does form part of the same enterprise, but does not form a visual-spatial unity with it; the hangar is connected via a perfectly straight tarred road to the southern part of the (ring) runway.

The hangar stands free-standing in the middle of arable land, surrounded only by some tall trees. The roof ridge of the greatest length of the building erected on a T-shaped plan extends from west-southwest to east-northeast and is at right angles to the road leading to it. The hangar came into being as a 'Sonderbau' and is at macro level part of a large military airfield structure from the years 1940-1945, at meso level of a sparse complex of aircraft parking positions originally realized in roughly linear relation along the runway in open and closed form, and within this at micro level a solitary, executed as an agricultural farm building for camouflage reasons, closed parking position.

Description

Relatively small, single-storey brick AIRCRAFT HANGAR (10), partly executed with approximately 50 cm thick external masonry, on a T-shaped plan which is somewhat short as far as the transverse part is concerned. The long part is covered by a hipped roof with mixed corrugated improved hollow (Dutch) tiles; the transverse part by a somewhat lower executed and ending in a pointed gable attached gabled roof. Shields of both gable ends relatively low extended. The facades are predominantly rendered. The hangar was built as a so-called 'Wärmehalle', that is to say as a heated parking or workshop space for aircraft. The north-northwest longitudinal facade / main facade is symmetrically executed with a later introduced brick facade, in which centrally an access opening with double green wooden sash doors and to the left and right of this three window openings, which are closed with green shutters. The right side facade contains two bricked-up window openings and to the right a bricked-up access opening under an arched opening, all presumably camouflage and formerly painted with windows and doors. The left side facade executed comparably, with traces of camouflage painting. The south facade including that of the T-part contains multiple traces of (possibly closed) facade openings, with or without camouflage painting; the most clear is a half-round stable window with spider-web glazing bars. The interior has been somewhat adapted to use as an agricultural storage building and the property also functions as parking space for vehicles. Construction, layout and details are to a high degree in original condition. High on the rear wall in red block letters "rauchen verboten". The entirely boarded, unconventionally constructed roof is in virtually original condition and is composed of sawn, partly by bolts, partly by nails coupled structural timber, partly on the basis of trusses and partly by diagonally placed planks set at right angles on top.

Valuation

AIRCRAFT HANGAR, of general importance as an extremely rare, virtually intact and characteristic component of a military camp originating from the Second World War and set up by the German occupier as part of a large military airfield, on account of: architectural-historical, urban planning, military and cultural-historical and complex and ensemble values, which can be demonstrated among other things by the traditionalist building style inspired by local forms, by the components and details characteristic of the building period, by the artificially established farm enterprise structure and camouflage carried through to the finest detail, by the special timber constructions applied in the roof, by the connection with and within the total military airfield concept and the spatial main lines and components of the camp, and by the mutual relationship of the forms applied in this.
