Omschrijving
Omschrijving

Description
Description
The HISTORICAL GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT consists of a system of straight avenues from the 18th century, a strip of landscaped park surrounded by the outer moat of around 1800 designed by J.P. Posth, a formal layout directly around the house designed by H. Poortman from 1926, a woodland walk with paths and watercourses to the southwest and northeast of the outer moat from the 19th and early 20th century and walks with views of farms and meadows and arable lands furnished with solitary trees and small woods. Centrally located is Verwolde house, in the northern part of the park is the coach house, to the southeast of the house the orangery. In the extreme northeast of the park layout is a memorial for the destroyed homestead Blankenborg, which was destroyed in the second half of the 17th century, but is still recognizable in the terrain.
Posth laid out a park within the straight lines of the 18th-century structure consisting of open (lawns) and closed (woodland) spaces, intersected by continuous paths. The moat around the house was given a winding course. The outer moat formed the boundary of the inner park. From this layout the outer shell is still present. In 1926 garden architect Hugo Poortman was commissioned to design a new garden around the house that had to fit within the existing park layout within the outer moat. Poortman was inspired by formal French garden art from the 18th century. He used two axes: an existing axis that ran straight to the front facade, with in front of the house an oblong lawn field with the drive around it and a second axis directed at the left side facade (southeast) with the new terrace. In this part of the garden he created various geometric compartments that were clearly visible from the house. The first of the three compartments consisted of grass with a boxwood monogram, then followed a sunken and walled compartment with boxwood figures, flanked by lawns and finally an elongated lawn that ended with a baroque mirror arch form. Borders were laid along the long sides of this lawn field, surrounded by a yew hedge with niches, intended for sculptures. Between this geometric garden and the outer moat lay the strip of landscaped park as a transition zone to the surrounding outer park and agricultural landscape. Due to necessary restrictions in maintenance, the sharp lines of Poortman's design became blurred, the flower borders disappeared. Garden and park were restored in the late 1970s of the 20th century, whereby the forms of Poortman's layout were respected and the coherence with the house was clarified again. For the flower borders on either side of the lawn of the south garden a planting plan by garden architect Mrs. A.E. Canneman-Philipse was implemented.
Furthermore, the following are important for the historical layout
- The two 18th-century avenues that converge at the short drive to the house. One runs to the south, the other to the northwest. Both avenues have avenue planting with oak. The protected 18th-century section of the southern avenue ends at the south side at the crossing with a crossing dirt road and is visually terminated on the other side by farm Meijer (component 11); the northwestern avenue ends at the entrance pillars at Markeloseweg (component 5A) and is then visually terminated by farm Henrikahoeve (components 7A, 7B and 7C).
- To the east of the house in front there is an open meadow in the landscape in which a substantial group of trees and the aforementioned farm Meijer.
- To the south of this runs a walk that branches off to the east from the south avenue and runs around a meadow with solitary trees and a small wood towards Dikke Boom (17th century).
- On the south side of the outer moat and to the west of the south avenue lies a coppice wood with winding avenues and watercourses intersected, with views through to the house and to the open landscape on the other side. Around 1900.
- To the northwest there is a view from the house of an open meadow in which some solitary trees and groups of trees. This terrain is closed off by a tree border in which on the north side farm Denneboom (component 10) is situated on a sight axis from the house and on the northwest side by the Allardhoeve and the service dwelling at Markeloseweg (components 8 and 9).
Assessment
The HISTORICAL GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the historical country estate Verwolde is of general cultural-historical and garden-historical importance:
- due to the 18th-century avenue structure
- due to the remains of the landscaped park designed by J.P. Posth
- due to the formal garden designed by H. Poortman within the landscaped park
- due to the laid-out walks outside the outer moat with views of the house and surroundings
- due to the deliberately created views from the house of the surrounding landscape with farms and groups of trees and solitary trees
