Inleiding
Visserstraat 18, voorheen bekend als 'Warenborgh' en 'Huijs van Montes', vormde van oudsher samen met Visserstraat 16 een fors pand met een kern van omstreeks 1490. Het laatmiddeleeuwse pand werd gebouwd als woonhuis voor Korolus Oudaert, deken van het kapittel van Breda, en bezat een religieuze wandschildering uit de zestiende eeuw. Deze is thans in de collectie van het Breda's Museum opgenomen. Het pand werd verbouwd en uitgebreid in de zeventiende en achttiende eeuw. In de negentiende eeuw werd het gesplitst in twee woningen waarbij het rechter gedeelte Visserstraat 16 en het linker gedeelte Visserstraat 18 werd. Aan het eind van de negentiende eeuw werd de gevel van Visserstraat 18 gestuct en van blokmotieven voorzien. Aan het eind van de twintigste eeuw is de gevel op de begane grond opnieuw ingedeeld. In de loop van de twintigste eeuw is het interieur meerdere malen verbouwd waardoor intern nog maar weinig historisch waardevolle onderdelen aanwezig zijn.

Het twee bouwlagen hoge pand bezit een samengestelde plattegrond. Het hoofdvolume bevindt zich evenwijdig aan de straat en wordt bekroond door een schilddak dat doorloopt boven Visserstraat 16. De gepleisterde voorgevel bezit op de eerste verdieping vier T-vensters met afgeronde hoeken en op de begane grond vier moderne vensters en twee moderne deuren. De gevel is voorzien van blokmotieven en wordt beëindigd door een geprofileerde lijst. Het pand bezit een middeleeuwse kelder met kaarsnissen en restanten van gewelven. De Oudhollandse kap boven het hoofdvolume bestaat uit vijftiende-eeuwse eiken jukspanten, met kromme spantbenen, korbeels, windverbanden en een nokgording.
Waardering
Het pand is van algemeen belang:
- het object heeft architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege de ouderdom, de toegepaste constructietechniek en de detaillering;
- het object heeft bouwhistorische en zeldzaamheidswaarde als zeer vroeg voorbeeld van een Oudhollandse kap mét nokgording;

Introduction
Visserstraat 18, formerly known as 'Warenborgh' and 'Huijs van Montes', historically formed together with Visserstraat 16 a substantial building with a core dating from around 1490. The late medieval building was constructed as a dwelling house for Korolus Oudaert, dean of the chapter of Breda, and possessed a religious wall painting from the sixteenth century. This is now included in the collection of the Breda Museum. The building was remodelled and extended in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In the nineteenth century it was divided into two dwellings whereby the right section became Visserstraat 16 and the left section Visserstraat 18. At the end of the nineteenth century the facade of Visserstraat 18 was plastered and decorated with rustication patterns. At the end of the twentieth century the facade at ground level was redesigned. In the course of the twentieth century the interior was remodelled several times so that only few historically valuable components remain internally.
Description
The two-storey building has a compound floor plan. The main volume is situated parallel to the street and is topped by a hipped roof that continues above Visserstraat 16. The plastered front facade has on the first floor four T-windows with rounded corners and at ground level four modern windows and two modern doors. The facade is decorated with rustication patterns and is finished with a moulded cornice. The building has a medieval cellar with candle niches and remains of vaults. The Old Dutch roof truss above the main volume consists of fifteenth-century oak timber-frame trusses, with curved truss members, corbels, wind braces and a roof ridge purlin.
Valuation
The building is of general importance:
- the object has architectural-historical value on account of its age, the construction technique employed and the detailing;
- the object has building-historical and rarity value as a very early example of an Old Dutch roof truss with a roof ridge purlin;
- the object has cultural-historical value on account of its original function as a distinguished residence of the Breda chapter.
